Oakmoss lichen (Evernia prunastri) is never cut. It comes down on its own. The woodland has been releasing it steadily through the past weeks of wind — pale gray-green above, whitish beneath, branching without a dominant direction.
It carries texture without carrying tonal weight. Most materials that bring texture also bring mass. Oakmoss slows the eye where it lands rather than moving it along.

Dry, it does not wilt. No water, no clock. For installation work built across two days, that matters more than anything else it offers. It asks only to be kept out of light — sun fades the gray-green, and it does not come back.

It is an epiphyte, taking nothing from the tree it sits on. Gathering is a walk and a basket.

In early April, I reclaimed one tired, collapsing crown.
By June, it stood upright with fresh architecture—fronds crisp, posture restored—
and a second crown rose beside it like a quiet confirmation.

Sword fern isn’t passive understory.
It’s responsive material.
Stewardship changes its structure, and structure changes your design palette.
