I’ve been seeing a lot of posts and ads lately saying “you don’t need a professional photographer,” and while I completely understand that every family has a budget, I don’t think people talk enough about what those first days with a newborn actually look like.
The reality is that many parents plan to do DIY newborn photos… and then birth, recovery, sleep deprivation, jaundice, colic, cluster feeding, and postpartum exhaustion hit all at once. Suddenly, setting up photos becomes one more overwhelming thing on an already full plate.
A professional newborn session is about so much more than just taking pictures. It’s about giving parents a chance to breathe, rest, and be taken care of for a little while too. A calm studio, comfortable seating, snacks, water, coffee, a warm environment, safe props, and someone experienced handling and soothing baby while parents can finally relax for a couple of hours.
Most people don’t realize:
• Newborn sessions are typically done within baby’s first two weeks.
• Some babies are sleepy and easygoing, while others are uncomfortable from colic, gas, or cluster feeding, and safely settling them takes patience, experience, and skill.
• Babies naturally smell mom and want to feed when she’s close by. Trying to pose and soothe baby while standing inches away can actually make things harder.
• Angles, lighting, wrapping, and posing are not random. Safe newborn posing is learned, practiced, and done with intention.
• Professional props are designed specifically with newborn safety in mind.
• Swaddling isn’t just wrapping a blanket..it requires attention to baby’s comfort, circulation, temperature, and cues.
And that’s before even talking about the gear, lighting, editing, temperature control, sanitation, and workflow behind the scenes.
Of course you can still take beautiful photos at home, I take phone photos of my own kids all the time, and those memories matter deeply. But professional newborn photography is different. It’s an investment in preserving a season that passes incredibly fast, while allowing parents to simply show up and be present.
Truthfully, most professional photographers don’t even take their own newborn photos. We know firsthand how much work, preparation, and care goes into capturing these fleeting first days safely and beautifully.
So if you’re expecting and are considering a newborn session, give me a call/text. I’m happy to make sure this experience is as beautiful and memorable for you and your family. 🫶🏻
