In 1958, NORAD accidentally created the tradition of tracking Santa Claus.
A Sears department store printed a Christmas ad telling kids to call Santa—but the phone number had a typo and rang directly to the U.S. military’s top command center. Instead of hanging up, the officer on duty told the child Santa was on his way. That one kind response turned into an annual tradition where NORAD now uses satellites, radar, and fighter jets to “track” Santa’s journey around the world every Christmas Eve.

ATTENTION TO ALL PARENTS WHO NEED TO TELL THE TRUTH ABOUT SANTA 🎅

Son: "Dad, I think I'm old enough now. Is there a Santa Claus?."

Dad: "Ok, I agree that you’re old enough. But before I tell you, I have a question for you. You see, the “truth” is a dangerous gift. Once you know something, you can't unknow it. Once you know the truth about Santa Claus, you will never again understand and relate to him as you do now. So my question is: Are you sure you want to know?"

Brief pause...

Son: "Yes, I want to know"

Dad: "Ok, I'll tell you: Yes there is a Santa Claus"

Son: "Really?"

Dad: Yes, really, but he's not an old man with a beard in a red suit. That's just what we tell kids. You see, kids are too young to understand the true nature of Santa Claus, so we explain it to them in a way that they can understand. The truth about Santa Claus is that he's not a person at all; he's an idea. Think of all those presents Santa gave you over the years. I actually bought those myself. I watched you open them. And did it bother me that you didn't thank me? Of course not! In fact it gave me great pleasure. You see, Santa Claus is THE IDEA OF GIVING FOR THE SAKE OF GIVING, without thought of thanks or acknowledgement.

When I saw that woman collapse on the subway last week and called for help, I knew that she'd never know that it was me that summoned the ambulance. I was being Santa Claus when I did that."

Son: "Oh."

Dad: "So now that you know, you're part of it. You have to be Santa Claus too now. That means you can never tell a young kid the secret, and you have to help us select Santa presents for them, and most important, you have to look for opportunities to help people.

Got it?"

In Iceland, the Christmas season includes a long standing tradition centered on thirteen figures known as the Yule Lads.

These characters come from Icelandic folklore and were first described in written form in the 19 century, although their origins trace back much earlier through oral storytelling.

The Yule Lads are the sons of two mountain dwelling trolls, Grýla and Leppalúði, who were said to live in the highlands surrounding Iceland’s volcanic interior.

Each Lad has a distinct personality, name, and behavior based on older rural life and the challenges of winter.

According to tradition, the Yule Lads begin their visits on the night of December 12. One arrives each evening, and each remains in town for thirteen days.

The first to appear is Sheep Cote Clod, known in folklore for pestering sheep. He is followed by characters such as Door Slammer, Spoon Licker, Sausage Swiper, and Window Peeper.

Their names come from old Icelandic tales in which the Lads caused mild trouble in farms and households, reflecting the humor and hardships of rural winter living.

Not my kind of Santa….

Belsnickel is a Christmas figure from German and Pennsylvania Dutch tradition. He appears as a rough, ragged man dressed in fur or old clothes, carrying a switch and a bag of treats. Belsnickel visits homes before Christmas to test children. If they behave well, he rewards them with candies or nuts. If they are naughty, he warns or lightly taps them with his switch to remind them to behave.
