🥁🎺 From Jacksonville, Alabama, to the national stage!

Every summer, something extraordinary happens right here in Calhoun County!

Some of the nation’s most talented young musicians and performers come together at Jacksonville State University to prepare for an incredible journey. They’re the Spirit of Atlanta Drum and Bugle Corps, a world-class performing arts organization competing on the national stage through Drum Corps International.

For weeks, these dedicated performers pour their hearts into perfecting every note, every movement, and every breathtaking moment. And before they travel across the country competing against the best drum corps in the nation, they give our community a special opportunity to experience their production right here at Jax State!

🌟 And 2026 was a year to remember!

Celebrating 50 years of excellence, Spirit of Atlanta’s production, Golden Summer, carried them all the way to the DCI World Championship Finals, where they earned an impressive 10th-place finish, their first Finals appearance since 2013!

We are incredibly proud that Calhoun County plays a part in this remarkable tradition.

If you’ve never experienced a Spirit of Atlanta performance in person, put it on your summer bucket list! The energy, precision, musicianship, and sheer talent are something you have to experience to believe.

🐦 The SkyTrail Birding Festival is almost here! This Saturday morning, October 10, head to Choccolocco Park from 8:00–11:00 AM for a guided birding experience designed for birders of all levels and all ages. We’ll start at the pavilion with an education station before heading out to explore the park, spot local birds and learn more about the incredible birdlife found right here in Calhoun County.

And you’ll be exploring with two experienced guides! Meet Tim Lindblom and Joseph Watts, who will be sharing their knowledge, experience and passion for birding throughout the morning.

🌿 Tim Lindblom
Tim is a dean at Jacksonville State University and has taught biology in Arkansas and Alabama for many years. Lindblom started his birding journey in Arkansas one afternoon when he came upon a Black-crowned Night Heron on a float trip on a local bayou. In his effort to find out more about this bird, he started a passion for birding that has resulted in decades of birding fulfillment including several international trips looking for birds with students. Highlights from Lindblom’s birding experience include being a volunteer member of the 2007 Cornell Laboratory of Ornithology search for the Ivory-billed Woodpecker and finding Scarlet Macaws in Belize with students this past summer.

🦉 Joseph Watts
Joe’s interest in birding began young, with his mother carrying him into the deep piney woods of Alabama’s Black Belt before he could walk. He has never visited an amusement park, but visited every Alabama State Park with his mother as a child. He’s been instrumental in developing the Alabama Birding Trails project, that highlights nearly 300 top birding spots across the state. He was elected as President Elect to the board of Alabama Audubon in 2015, and now serves as the VP of Development and Membership. He served as a board member for the National Audubon Society for 6 years, as the first board member elected from Alabama in the organization’s modern history. He was a founding board member and the first VP of Birdability from 2020-2024, an organization dedicated to bringing birding to everyone, regardless of disability.
