FLOWER SCHOOL: How to keep your flowers alive longer!! Tips and tricks to get the longest possible vase life out of your fresh cuts! 🌻
I spent months growing these little freeloaders, so once they leave my hands, I would very much like them to remain among the living for as long as possible. 😂
A few things that make a MUCH bigger difference than people realize:
💧 CHANGE THE WATER!
This is the big one. Flowers are literally drinking the water in that vase. After a couple days, it starts collecting bacteria, plant goo and whatever else is happening in there.
If the water starts looking like something a frog might enjoy, we’ve gone too far.
Dump it. Clean the vase. Add fresh water.
✂️ Give the stems a fresh cut.
Every couple days, snip a little off the bottom. Just a little sniparoo. The ends of stems can start to seal up or get clogged with bacteria, so a fresh cut basically reopens their drinking straw.
🍃 Nothing leafy below the waterline!!
Leaves underwater start breaking down so FAST. And decomposing leaves + water = stinky soup. We do not want stinky soup!
🌡️ Your flowers like it cooler than you do.
Keep them away from heat vents, blazing sunny windows and hot appliances. That gorgeous spot where the afternoon sun absolutely cooks your kitchen counter?
Your bouquet hates it there. 😂
🍎 Move them away from the fruit bowl.
This one surprises people! Ripening fruit releases ethylene gas, which can speed up aging in flowers. Keep the nanners away!
🌸 One flower dying before everybody else? Remove her!! Different varieties naturally have different vase lives. If one bloom starts getting funky, pull it out instead of letting it deteriorate in the arrangement. Your bouquet does NOT have to die as a group project!
And finally…
Some flowers simply last longer than others. 🤷🏻♀️
A flower fading after several days doesn’t necessarily mean something went wrong. That’s nature doing nature things.
Pull the tired blooms, rearrange what’s left, shorten the stems, put them in a smaller vase…and suddenly you have Blumes jr. 🌸
Fresh flowers aren’t permanent, unfortunately. 😒
But with a little care, we can absolutely make them last as long as possible!
