Story Time!
First 2025 fail of the season. My favorite flower bed is typically my chaos garden. I usually will mix a bunch of left over seeds and toss them to see what happens. For the past 2 years, it has been my favorite bed. Pollinator haven and just bursting with color. I did the same this year. However, I also threw down a “beneficial insect flower mix” along with my many packets of Cosmos seeds. Wasn’t even sure what was in it the mix, but it sounded good. MISTAKE. Here I am all season thus far babying this bed. I’ve been so excited for all of these lush beautiful “cosmos” to bloom. YALL. Finally pulled out my favorite plant identification app. (PictureThis for those needing a good app) IVE BEEN BABYING RAGWEED this entire season. Giant thriving ragweed!! What a rookie mistake!
Yesterday I decided to try to tackle said Ragweed. Not only do I have an entire bed of Ragweed, but also an entire bed of Morning Glories that were choking out everything in their path. Including my imposter Cosmos. If you know anything about Morning Glories, they are BEAUTIFUL when they bloom. But one cannot just grow Morning Glories in the ground. They will spread and choke out literally everything around them. I typically grow them in a pot so that they vine all over my arch. But they have always been contained. Until now. 🫣 I got about a third of the bed ripped out last night. And it was a much bigger task than I could have ever imagined. The Morning Glories have created an entire forest amongst the Ragweed. Lesson learned. Sharing this post so that you too don’t make the same mistake.
Don’t buy the seed mixes. Buy seeds from reputable suppliers that explicitly state what is in the mix. Aim for seeds that include natives to our area that aren’t invasive. Before you plant anything new, research. Google it. Read real life stories. Hopefully I caught it all before it spreads and takes over my entire operation. I can’t even begin to imagine trying to navigate Morning Glories in all of my beds. I would rather burn it all down if I’m being honest. 🤣
Thank you for coming to my Ted talk. Thank you for following along on this journey. I’ve been quiet lately while patiently waiting for the Blume explosion, but it’s coming! Zinnias have finally started popping this week and we have quite a few Dahlias budding up. Sunflowers are getting bigger and everything is finally starting to come alive. While this “summer season” may have been a slow start, the end of the summer shall be abundant! Stay tuned my friends! 🫶🏼
