"August 4th
David Vera, 41 years old, South Tower 84th floor
David Vera was born on August 4, 1960 in the Bronx, NY. He lived in Brooklyn, NY. David had a daughter, Jennica, who was 18 years old at the time of David’s passing. David was very close to and protective of Jennica. Their saying to each other was “I love you twice as much as anything you could say, universe, infinity, and beyond the galaxies to the fifth dimension.” When Jennica would go out on dates with boys, David would have her date clasp his keys before they left so that he had a copy of his fingerprints. Jennica said, “He was very overprotective. He would always say he trusted me, but he didn’t trust the world.” David also had a son, David John, who went by DJ and was college-aged at the time of David’s passing. David made a point to stay in shape, exercising daily and spending his Saturdays playing pickup basketball in Park Slope. David’s longtime friend, Eddie Claudio, said, “He wasn't too much of a dribbler, but if you left him alone he'd burn you. He was a go-to guy. The type of guy that if you needed help, he was there in clinch time.”
David worked as a senior telecommunications technician for Euro Brokers on the 84th floor of the World Trade Center’s South Tower. On the morning of September 11, 2001, David was working on the 84th floor of the South Tower when Flight 11 struck the North Tower. An announcement over the PA system said, “Building Two is secure. There is no need to evacuate Building Two,” so David stayed on the floor and continued to work. At 9:03 a.m., David was working on the 84th floor when Flight 175 struck the South Tower. He began trying to evacuate with his co-workers at Euro Brokers, Bobby Coll, Kevin York, Brian Clark, and Ron DiFrancesco, carrying a walkie-talkie with him as he went. They started down Stairway A, the only viable stairway in the South Tower from the point of impact and above, and ran into two people, a man and a woman, on the 81st floor that had come up from the 80th floor due to the smoky conditions. The woman said, “Stop, stop, you’ve got to go up. You've got to go up. You can't go down. There is too much smoke and flames below,” and Brian disagreed, insisting they should go down. He then heard a voice calling for help from underneath debris, a worker named Stanley Praimnath who had been trapped underneath debris. Brian and Ron left the situation and rescued Stanley while Bobby and Kevin took a hand under each elbow of the women and started up the stairs, while David followed behind them with a walkie-talkie. Brian, Ron, and Stanley all managed to escape the South Tower, accounting for three of the eighteen to survive from within or above the South Tower’s impact zone. Ron was the last person to escape the South Tower before its collapse at 9:59 a.m. Sadly, David, Bobby, and Kevin were still inside the South Tower upon its collapse and did not survive the attack. Though their lives were unfairly taken on September 11th, David, Bobby, and Kevin are never forgotten. David’s life, love, accomplishments, and memories are forever cherished and remembered.
WE WILL NEVER FORGET. ❤️🕊"
