For this week's we are checking in with Jessica Duke!
Since graduating from Penn College in 2020 with a degree in Landscape/Horticulture, Jessica has started her own floral business, Jessie the Florist, and now uses her talents to craft botanical creations for life events and milestones.
PC: Are there any words of wisdom you received from a member of the Penn College faculty or staff that you have found to be especially helpful in your career post-graduation?
JD: One of the most impactful things I took away came from Professor Ski. He wasnโt just teaching in the classroom; he also ran a Christmas tree farm and a landscaping business. Seeing that in action showed me that I didnโt have to limit myself to just one path. He didnโt need to sit me down and say, โYou can do it all,โ because he lived it. Watching him manage multiple businesses while still being an incredible professor made me realize that I could create a life where I do many things I love. That example gave me the confidence to grow my floral business, pursue creative projects, and understand that I donโt have to choose just one version of success.
PC: How instrumental would you say your time at Penn College was in you having the business and career that you do now?
JD: Penn College gave me more than just skills; it gave me the belief that I could build something of my own. The hands-on learning, the real-life projects like starting the h**p farm, and professors who truly cared and shared their own personal journeys all pushed me to dream bigger. It showed me that running a business wasnโt some far-off idea; it was something I could actually do. That foundation helped me create a floral business I love, one that lets me be creative, independent, and take risks.
