The West Central Route 66 Visitor Center is a 21,000 square foot multipurpose center includes Route 66 Museum & Neon Sign Graveyard, a banquet/event hall, outdoor amphitheater, taproom, gift shop! Bernalillo County and City of Albuquerque are developing The Route 66 Visitor Center located at 12200 Central Ave SW ABQ NM 87121, atop of Nine Mile Hill, near Atrisco Vista and I-40. The West Central

Route 66 Visitor Center is a multipurpose center that celebrates the history and culture of America's Mother Road. The center is a project led by the Southwest Alliance of Neighbors and the West Central Community Development Group, who over the last 28 years advocated and secured public financing from state, county and city government to make the center a reality. The 21,000 square foot facility includes a banquet/event hall, outdoor amphitheater, Route 66 museum, taproom, gift shop, and administrative offices. The outdoor areas, including the parking lot, will be utilized for a makeshift drive-in theater, car shows, and other community events. Albuquerque has the longest stretch of the historic mother road in the country, and when operational, the visitor center will have a national presence and locally will further advance economic development on the West Central corridor. It will help stimulate private and public investment, create jobs and bring greater prosperity to the West Side, and all of Albuquerque.

Have you heard of Angel Delgadillo?

Born on April 19, 1927, along U.S. Route 66 in Seligman, Arizona, Angel has been dubbed the "guardian angel" of U.S. Route 66.

After the decline and eventual delisting of the route from the United States Highway System in 1985, he went on to found the Historic Route 66 Association of Arizona. Eventually, Route 66 associations were founded in all eight US 66 states with a similar goal: preserving the historic road. Thanks for your efforts, Angel!

Did you know that the original Route 66 alignment looped around the north side of the Sandias to reach Santa Fe? Politics and geography blended in 1937 to "re-align" the Route. Instead of passing through Albuquerque north-to-south along 4th Street it shifted to an east-to-west trajectory along Central Avenue. So today 4th and Central is the corner of Route 66 and Route 66. A unique intersection surrounded by Route 66 icons like the KiMo Theater and Skip Maisel's Store.

Built in the 1940s, and originally called the Hill Top Trading Post, this RV park just off Central Avenue offers full hookups for motorists hauling their own tow-behinds. But those without, or curious to test out sleeping quarters of the era, can rent vintage trailers, choosing from a ’69 Airstream, ’63 Winnebago or ’56 teardrop, among others.

Burgers and shakes are plentiful at this classic 1950s-style diner, decorated with images of Elvis, Betty Boop, and Marilyn Monroe, a jukebox, and soda fountain. 66 Diner runs out of a former Phillip’s service station. Make sure to stop by their “Pile Up” and “Fender Bender,” a wall of road signs and advertisements that make for a prime photo op.
