I am writing this out of deep frustration and growing concern after yet another unacceptable experience at Shands Hospital.

After enduring a 30-hour wait in the ER, my husband, Mike, was finally admitted yesterday—only to receive confirmation that he had suffered a stroke, adding to the long list of medical issues we’ve been facing since May 9th. This has been a heartbreaking, exhausting journey for our family.

But what truly pushed this situation into the realm of the surreal and disgraceful happened just as I was leaving the hospital last night.

A dying rat—yes, a rat—was struggling to crawl near the entrance of the hospital. What’s worse? Multiple staff members pointed it out to patients as a joke, with one doctor going so far as to say it “must’ve escaped from the lab” before laughing and walking away. Not one person I saw attempted to call maintenance or remove the animal. It was left there, suffering, in plain sight of patients and families already in crisis.

This is beyond unsanitary—it’s inhumane, unprofessional, and disgraceful for any medical facility, let alone a hospital of Shands’ reputation.

We’ve tried to stay positive, to trust the process, to give grace where it’s due. But what I witnessed last night wasn’t just negligence—it was a failure of compassion, of hygiene, and of basic respect.

Shands, you must do better. Your patients—and the families desperately advocating for them—deserve safe, clean, and humane care. This isn’t just a bad look. It’s a breach of trust.
