Ruth E. Carter keeps making history π
The legendary costume designer earned her fifth Oscar nomination for her work on "Sinners," making her the most-nominated Black woman in Academy Awards history. Her other wins were for "Black Panther," "Wakanda Forever," "Malcolm X," and "Amistad."
After her wins for both "Black Panther" and "Wakanda Forever," she became the only Black woman to win an Oscar more than once. Out of the 3,1000 Oscar statuettes handed out in the nearly 100 years of Oscars history, only 20 have gone to Black women, approximately 0.006%.
With 5 nominations and counting, Ruth is continuing to carve space where it hasnβt existed before and pushing the industry toward a future where Black women are seen, celebrated, and recognized as often as they deserve to be.
