Johnson Park Update

A LOT is taking shape at Johnson Park!

Restrooms + Shelters: Kent County Parks Department is making big progress near the Green Loop trailhead. This Grand River Greenway Hub will feature tons of parking, paved non-motorized trail access in both directions, open green space, covered shelters, restrooms, and — most importantly — direct access to what is shaping up to soon be one of the best trail systems in West Michigan.

How soon ? We’re working on a date. Stay tuned!

MTB Trail Progress

The Johnson Park Support Team has partnered with Chris Cordle, the signage design maestro behind Mosquito Creek’s signage portfolio.

The focus is clear directional signage and adaptive trail ratings. With multiple intersections, scenic drive crossings, and access points, Johnson Park is being designed so riders can choose their own adventure.

Construction Updates

• 2 of 3 Flow Zone jump lines are roughed in
• One-way return trail is taking shape
• Majority of XC Blue is roughed in and connected
• Original 6 miles remain on track for a Fall opening
• Full 8-mile system to follow later this year

We’ll keep the updates coming as this project moves closer to opening day.

Hammond Hill got an upgrade!

The professionally built trail just outside of Hastings now has a skill zone featuring berms and progressive features as part of a partnership with the City of Hastings and the Barry County Recreation Department. This new loop built by the experts at Flowtrack MTB will be a great addition for skill development alongside the existing trails at Hammond Hill.

Trail Day Recap | Cannonsburg State Game Area

THANK YOU to our incredible WMMBA volunteers!

This crew knocked out another major milestone by replacing/ restoring bridge #5 of 6 at Cannonsburg State Game Area, with sustainability repairs completed at the Section 3 entrance and Section 4 exit.

We had an awesome turnout, including several new faces alongside some of our regular trail legends (Bill Norman). Every volunteer makes a difference, and we're grateful for everyone who showed up ready to work.

Volunteers needed! CSGA Trail Day - Saturday, July 11 - 9AM to Noon

Meet at the main Cannonsburg State Game Area lot on 4 Mile Road to help with some bridge repair and erosion control projects on the trail. These vital projects will help upgrade some of the older wooden bridges and will ensure that the trail can handle the drier and hotter conditions we see this time of year.

Summer is in full swing, and trail conditions and the forecast are looking prime heading into the weekend and beyond.

A few important trail updates:

Cannonsburg State Game Area: We have a volunteer trail day this Saturday from 9:00am-Noon. Crews will be restoring bridges in Sections 3 and 4. The trail will not be officially closed, but riders who continue beyond Section 2 should be comfortable using the road to return to the main trailhead.

Cannonsburg Ski Area: The ski area will be closed from 6:00 a.m.–3:00 p.m. for the Dirty Burg event. Sign up and join the fun: https://ultrasignup.com/register.aspx?did=136522

Hammond Hill: A special project kicks off Monday and Tuesday. The main mountain bike trail will remain open, but heavy equipment will be onsite as we build something new, cool, and special.

A huge thank you to all of the volunteers and community partners who joined us for our Trail Maintenance Training at Johnson Park!

Professional trail builders from Spectrum Trail Design shared industry best practices on:
Water management
Trail tread maintenance
Maintenance efforts focused on long-term sustainability

Our outstanding WMMBA Trail Coordinators also shared real-world experience and lessons learned from maintaining trails at Manhattan Park, Hammond Hill, Cannonsburg Ski Area, and The Dragon, giving attendees practical insights that can be applied across our entire trail network.

A special thank you to Kent County Parks Department for partnering with us, helping coordinate the event, and providing valuable expertise on environmental stewardship and land management considerations throughout the training.

Investing in our volunteers means investing in the future of our trails. Every new skill learned helps create more sustainable, enjoyable trails for everyone to ride.
