Just got back from a beautiful trip to Grande Riviere and honestly… what a peaceful escape 🌿✨

This quiet village is full of life in the most calming way — from the warm, welcoming people to the relaxing atmosphere that makes you slow down and appreciate nature.

Right now is turtle nesting season 🐢💚 and it’s truly an unforgettable experience to witness. If you’re planning a visit, make sure to link up with the Grande Riviere Nature Tour Guide Association for a proper guided tour 📞 469-1288.

The remains of a World War II Watch Tower still stand quietly along R.E. Road in Los Iros, Trinidad, overlooking the historic Columbus Channel. 🇹🇹

Built around 1940–1941 by the Royal Engineers, these concrete towers were part of the island’s coastal defense system during World War II. Their purpose was to monitor the Columbus Channel and help protect Trinidad’s vital oil installations — a critical fuel source for the Allied war effort.

At the time, German submarines were active throughout the Caribbean during the Battle of the Caribbean, targeting oil tankers and shipping routes. In fact, the German U-boat German submarine U-162 was sunk northeast of Trinidad on September 3, 1942 by British naval forces.

Historical accounts suggest there were at least two of these watch towers in southern Trinidad:

• One in Los Iros, overlooking the Columbus Channel
• Another near Pitch Lake in La Brea, watching over the Gulf of Paria

Today, the Los Iros tower remains as a quiet reminder of Trinidad’s role in global history. Just a short distance away, R.E. Road leads to the beautiful Erin Bouffe Mud Volcano, where history and nature meet in the deep south.

A hidden piece of Trinidad & Tobago’s wartime past still standing strong.
