🪔 The four-wick deya (Chaumukhi Deya) lit for Yam Deep holds a special spiritual significance in Hindu tradition. It is an offering to Lord Yama (Yamraj), the deity of death, justice and dharma, made to seek protection for the family against Akaal Mrityu (untimely or premature death).
🪔 Why are there FOUR wicks?
The four wicks traditionally represent the four cardinal directions:
East: Protection and blessings in the East.
West: Protection and blessings in the West.
North: Protection and blessings in the North.
South: Protection and blessings in the South, the direction associated with Lord Yama.
Together, the four flames symbolize protection extending in every direction, encompassing the entire family, whether they are at home, travelling or living far away.
🙏 Why do we offer light to Lord Yama?
Yam Deep is traditionally observed during the Divali period, commonly on Dhanteras (2 days before Divali), although some families observe it on Narak Chaturdashi ( day before Divali).
The deya is usually placed outside the home, on the southern corner or side of your yard.
Through this offering, devotees seek blessings for:
Protection from untimely death and accidents.
Long life and good health for loved ones.
Peace, safety and well-being within the household.
The strength to live according to dharma.
These are spiritual intentions associated with the ritual, rather than guarantees that misfortune cannot occur.
❤️ The deeper spiritual meaning
There is something particularly beautiful about Yam Deep.
Most deeyas lit during Divali celebrate light, happiness and prosperity. But the Yam Deep reminds us that life's greatest blessing is having our loved ones alive and well.
We may pray for wealth, success, happiness and abundance, but what is the value of these blessings if the people we love are no longer there to share them?
The four flames can therefore serve as a heartfelt reminder that our prayers extend beyond ourselves.
We pray for our parents, our children, our husbands and wives, our siblings and every person whose presence makes our lives meaningful.
When we light the four-wick Yam Deep, we are not celebrating death. We are expressing gratitude for life and praying for the continued protection of those we love.
That is a meaningful way to understand the tradition's spiritual message.
