Contemp{minated} is the official contemporary dance club of NTU. Founded in 2001, NTU CAC Contemporary Dance Club was first established as a community for modern ballet dancers within the university to develop their passion for dance. Since her inauguration, the club has grown and diversified wi

th dancers of various backgrounds seeking the liberation of dance expression. Rebranded as Contemp{minated} in 2011, the club sought a new direction. Since then, the club has grown to develop an artistic dare through her repertoire of performances. Often conveying themes that are widely considered pensive, Contemp{minated} aims at engaging and provoking her audiences through dance, movement and expression. Miss Anthea Seah (T.H.E Dance Company) took over the reins in 2015. Nurturing individuality and celebrating creativity are two major themes that the club aspires to achieve and hopes to instil in her dancers. Past Productions:

Contemp{minated} physical trial class sign-ups are open!

Trial classes provides you with a sneak preview of what Contemp{minated} is about and allows you to gauge your interest in joining the club. Our trial classes will be taught by our resident instructor, Shannon, as well as our dance captain, Victoria! No prior dance experience is required!

Hello everyone! Hope y'all have been well and safe throughout the summer break 😆

As we move on to AY21/22, let's not forget the hard work and dedication put in by our instructors as well as senior and alumni members at Contemp{minated}.

We would also like to specially thank our former instructors, Marcus and Anthea, both of whom have been integral to the club's growth and development! We hope to continue providing a safe and conducive space for all members to experience different styles of contemporary dance. ☺️

With our new instructor Shannon together with the rest of the members of the club, we warmly welcome freshies and current NTU students to JOIN OUR FAMILY!

As we've mentioned in our previous post, we're excited to welcome our new resident instructor, Shannon Choo! Shannon began her RAD ballet training at the age of 3 under the tutelage of Miss Pang Ling and Miss Lan Minli. Starting contemporary dance training at the age of 13, she has competed in various local and international competitions, clinching many awards. Shannon’s passion for dance has led her to various platforms of performing, choreography and now teaching which she considers what she loves doing the most.

In her teenage years, she was part of TRDO’s Youth Ambassador for around two years, and trained under Mr Ryan Tan and company members. Joining TRDOCo as a company dancer in 2019, she performed in shows such as EPIC! Jeffrey Dance Academy’s Epic Event and TRDOco(Emoji), whilst training regularly for future shows.

Her passion for choreography started when she was 18 where she was invited to choreograph and perform a couple of ballet and contemporary pieces for RAD dance challenge 2017. Her work was presented in Singapore Dance Theatre- Celebration in Dance 2018.

Shannon's latest choreographic work was presented in Dance Capital’s annual recital show in 2019. She was also part of Dance Capital’s first recital show in 2017 called DANCE MUSICAL: THE P.A. She was also part of a ballet production as one of the leading roles in the classic Sleeping Beauty, Lilac Fairy. Aside from performing, Shannon was also engaged in a few commercial video shoots with clients like Canon Asia and Starhub Singapore.

In 2018, Shannon started teaching adult contemporary open classes in Dance Capital where she shares her own style with the public, yet still prioritising nurturance of her students. Shannon loves to bring out the confidence and performance quality in dancers as she explores sharp and powerful movements while emphasising on muscle engagement that can be applied in choreographies. She also encourages dancers to explore their own style.

Through her art, Shannon looks forward to continuing her dance career and inspiring audiences and students nationwide.

Shannon's vision: My dance philosophy has always been to create a safe space for my students to explore and express their individuality and creativity. With the experience I have accumulated throughout my career, I aim to nurture and guide them in this journey of self-discovery through a fine balance of artistic movements and techniques.

In addition to establishing a healthy philosophy where members can feel like they belong, one of my main objectives for Contemp{minated} is to rejuvenate and improve the culture of the club through higher training standards and practices.

Apart from the skills and knowledge that I will be imparting to the members, I will provide them with valuable insights from the commercial dance industry and will be a mentor to elevate their dance journey beyond their current standards.

With the lack of performing spaces and opportunities available due to the current pandemic, utilizing concept videos is one of the possible ways we can adapt to the situation, which will showcase the club's capabilities and boost their portfolio.

I am confident and excited to embark on this new beginning and I strive to provide the members of Contemp{minated} with a safe platform to showcase their “inner voice”.

We'd like to take this opportunity to say a big THANK YOU to AY 20/21 Main Comm for doing your very best for the club amidst the countless Covid restrictions 🤍😢 We know it was hard complying with the ever-changing SMMs, and we're very grateful to still have been able to experience most of our yearly events!

Contemp{minated}'s first dance concept video of a series: Love Story: Level 1. Conceptualised by resident instructor Anthea Seah, this video features the 'Love Stories' segment from our first site-specific production titled 'Here.Us.Now', back in March 2016. Here.Us.Now was the first time the club departed from the conventional theatre and black-box setting that was part of our usual production routine, and had a full-length show at The Hive in NTU. The Hive, a building which was selected as a finalist in the World Architectural Festival in 2015, had unique design elements that enabled our dancers to creatively use space in a way which we had never experienced before.
