Last Friday was a banger ⚡️🎵

Kolgruvan turned into a stage for up and coming musical artists to share their talent and, hopefully, gain new fans as part of . Two local bands, Parvel and Missionären från Mars, lit up the crowd with their tunes. Topped off by Gothenburg DJ royalty Fia Fomo, the evening was one to remember.

There will be more AlfaLive gigs to come, stay tuned!

And if you are a local band craving a performance with a live audience, you can always send the festival a message.

Meet our members , Clara and Victor, woodworkers who strive to create handmade furniture that will last and honor traditional ways of wood craftsmanship. Kolgruvan spoke to them about their creative process, the value of community and experience working at Kolgruvan:

“We really enjoy the freedom of choosing our own projects and building relationships with the clients. It is so fun to be involved in every part of the project, from an idea to the sketch, from a request to the finished product.
We like to follow our client’s desires and see how their input and our expertise create something special as a result. We had clients with whom we would have dinners and really get into their vision, get a vibe of their house, see other furniture that they have, styles that they prefer. Those projects are time demanding but so rewarding.

Actually, a lot of those customers came through Kolgruvan. It is a big plus that we are here, it helped us so much. But it has been great to socialise as well, not just to network. You cannot lock yourself in the studio forever and just lose a sense of reality, community. You gain so much from sharing your week days with people, even if it is just having lunch together. It is a place that is always in motion, lots of new stuff happening all the time and it gives you motivation to not stand still as well”.

Full interview is published on our blog: kolgruvan.com/blog

July has marked a month of performance research at Kolgruvan. As part of our Artist Jump In residency, a project aimed at assisting the local creative talent in Gothenburg, we welcomed the dance theatre company Iraqi Bodies. They took over our main space and worked on their movement and text-based research project “Proposon”.

“We greatly appreciated not having the pressure of presenting an outcome at the end of our collaboration. It enabled us to be in solitude and creativity. The work of an artist is not primarily the outcome of a performance but mainly the countless hours of practice and research that unfortunately isn't always easy to find resources for”, – says Josephine Gray, one of the artistic directors of the company about her time at Kolgruvan.

The work of Iraqi Bodies explores the link between movement and gesture, between dance and physical theatre. “Proposon”, which is an Ancient Greek word for face/mask, investigates the movements that arise in a solitary versus a collective body. The results of this research will be revealed further down the line but you can find dates for the presentations of other projects by Iraqi Bodies on their website, www.iraqibodies.com/upcoming

We are glad that our space could become a temporary home to such an exciting idea. If you have a creative idea that would as well be perfect for our Artist Jump In residency then you are more then welcome to still submit your application on our website. And we will notify you when our space will be ready for a new application round and residency to be hosted.

Photo credentials (in order of appearance): Elena Perota, Nico Lanubile, Anmar Taha.

While the applicants for our newest “Artist JumpIn” residency await the decision, we want to tell you about our first resident.

Alexander Stevenson, UK-born but Gothenburg-based artist, approached us with a unique idea of building a whole boat within our walls. The prospect in itself seemed exciting but the story of this project is even more intriguing. Following conversations with Vänersborg Museum and local people around lake Vänern, Stevenson rediscovered a kind of boat shed traditionally made from old salmon boats. This boat-shelter connects to other research by the artist into the social history of rödfärg, and continues to shape an ongoing enquiry into the lusthus or Swedish ‘folly’, connecting boats, rödstuga and soil paint distinct to Sweden.

Throughout his residency in March, Alexander has managed to build a prototype of the boat and present it during one of the Kolgruvan’s scratch nights. At some point, Stevenson’s journey around lake Vänern will begin just a few meters away from Kolgruvan and the whole concept will come full circle.

If you have a vision of how to use Kolgruvan’s space for the sake of art just like Alexander, but you have missed the chance to apply to our residency, don’t worry. The application form is still open and you can submit your ideas. And when the next residency will be announced, your application would be automatically in the running.

In the meantime, you are always welcome to visit Kolgruvan during many of our cultural events. We have workshops, lectures and public performances. See you soon!

Meet our community member, Robin Ahlqvist! A freelance actor, he runs his own company from Kolgruvan, produces film, music, rerecords VHS, cooks and so much more.

He became a member of Kolgruvan one year ago and now is an integral part of our daily life. He is usually the “bard” of our community, strumming some tunes on the rooftop, but also constantly comes up with new ideas on how to improve the space. Now Robin is developing his acting career and hopes to lend a part that he could really flourish.

R: Being at Kolgruvan helped me so much to really focus on that. I was a bedroom producer for many years and it is a huge difference coming here, into the space that I pay for. I’m investing in myself basically.
I think a place like Kolgruvan really encourages you to explore your craft in quite unusual ways, think outside of the box. Being surrounded by people with different creative professions made me wonder what else I can do.

Send Robin a message if you have a project that he might be interested in!

If you want to become a member of Kolgruvan’s coworking just like Robin, send us an email to [email protected]
