We are ecstatic to welcome to Commune this Thursday, 8/14 for a Brutal Tenderness listening party and live performance.🦋

David Franklin Courtright is an LA-based singer, songwriter, musician, poet, writer and baker. Born in North Carolina and raised in Atlanta, David absorbed the eclectic range of musical influences the South had to offer, from Appalachian folk to Classic Rock to Southern hip-hop.

“Building on the buzz of earlier singles ‘boy’ and ‘feels’ (ft. Julianna Barwick), ‘Brutal Tenderness’ is a sprawling, kaleidoscopic debut. Written across three continents over eight years, it’s a reclamation of q***r identity, a eulogy for innocence, and ultimately, a love letter to the self—”a triumphant and harrowing reclamation” of the boy who once had to hide.”

Brutal Tenderness came out on .records August 8th. We’ll have vinyl copies for sale, plus shirts n socks.

We’ll ride through the neo-traditional ‘80s and ‘90s, showcasing the legends who defined each era. Join us for a night of timeless hits and deep cuts that shaped country music as we know it. The high production value on some these country albums sounds downright heavenly on the Klipsches!

Truth or Dare? 💋We’re revisiting this classic doc starring the Queen of Pop on Tuesday, 8/12 at 7:30p ahead of her birthday this week.

“This is paramount Madonna: the exceptional behind-the-scenes tour doc, directed by Alek Keshishian capturing her astounding “Blond Ambition World Tour” of 1990. Initially hired to shoot the tour’s kick-off in Japan for a promotional featurette, Keshishian (only 24 at the time!) convinced Madonna that the backstage drama and worldwide controversies swirling around the pop spectacle would make an astonishing, unforgettable document of her career’s most significant moment. Hey Friends, if you haven’t heard the heavy news yet, our founding partner Chris Devoe is battling stage 3 cancer and began treatment a few weeks ago. To raise funds for the mounting medical bills, we’re having a BENEFIT PARTY this Monday, August 11th from 6 — 11p. If you’ve been in the Atlanta music scene for any time, you’ve no doubt crossed paths with Devoe, and have seen what a kind and talented human he is. He and Roberto Lang, aka go waaay back, so Roberto is coming in to do a DJ set for him. We’ll also have some southern home cooking by and our kitchen crew, along with our full drink menu with specials. It’s a rough road ahead, but let’s make the best of it and enjoy the company of friends on this eve (that’s all that matters). 💛

Dorothy Ashby is one artist we ALWAYS return to and we’re celebrating her birthday this Wed. 8/6 with a set of her recordings, along with related music in her realm. Born in Detroit, Ashby brought the harp to modern jazz in a whole new way, introducing aspects of bebop, funk, Brazilian and psychedelia. To hear her is to love her, come get hip to the harp. 🪽

Tuesday 8/5, we’re screening “The World According to Allee Willis” a 2024 documentary about songwriter and artist Allee Willis, best known for writing the “Friends” theme song, the Earth Wind & Fire mega-hit “September” and “The Color Purple” musical, began filming her life as a kid in 1950s Detroit and never stopped. She pursued creative expression at all costs while struggling with not fitting established gender and sexual norms…until she found a path to love.

Summertime is Rum Time and we got two cool runners: An Almost Famous (the less famous version of a Naked & Famous) with , , genepi and lime. We hesitated having any cute music-related names for our drinks, but this one was too good to pass up.

And our Rum Old Fashioned with house made spiced syrup, bitters and . Blackwell, as in Chris Blackwell who started Island Records, and launched the careers of Bob Marley, Grace Jones and U2. His bio The Islander is choice summer reading for all you music heads.🌞

Both of these are gonna pair beautifully with the Caribbean inflected menu is bringing this weekend. Come get on Island Time. 🌴
