After sitting with couples through every stage of planning a wedding here, these are the six things that actually make the difference between a calm process and a stressful one:

1️⃣ Work out your maximum spending limit - allocate your budget realistically, before you fall for something you can't afford.
2️⃣ Research everything - our free guides and PDFs are a good place to start.
3️⃣ Follow up with Portuguese vendors. Always. They're notoriously bad at email, and holidays are taken seriously here - a slow reply isn't a red flag, it's normal.
4️⃣ Build a plan that leads up to the wedding - know what you need to do, and when.
5️⃣ Hire a coordinator - someone whose only job on the day is making sure everything you planned actually happens.
6️⃣ Create super clear briefs, but allow for creativity - tell your vendors exactly what you need, then trust them to bring their expertise to it.

None of this is complicated. But it's easy to miss when you're planning a wedding from another country, in your spare time, without anyone to check it against.
