Karlheinz Essl studied composition with Friedrich Cerha and electroacoustic music with Dieter Kaufmann at the Vienna Musikhochschule (1981–87), and musicology and art history at the University of Vienna (PhD in 1989 on Anton Webern). Until 1984, he was active as a double bassist in chamber and experimental jazz groups.
He was composer-in-residence at Darmstadt (1990–94) and IRCAM in Paris (1992–93). From 1995 to 2006, he taught Algorithmic Composition in Linz, and since 2007 he has been professor of electroacoustic and experimental composition at the University of Music in Vienna. Between 1992 and 2016, he was music curator of the Essl Museum.
His work focuses on algorithmic composition, generative art, and sound installations. He develops software such as the Real Time Composition Library and the real-time environment m@ze°2. He frequently collaborates with artists from other disciplines, including Harald Naegeli, Jonathan Meese, Vibeke Sorensen, and more recently Andrea Nagl and Erwin Uhrmann.
A versatile composer, his output spans instrumental, electronic music and improvisation. He was featured at WIEN MODERN (1989), Salzburg Festival (1997), and Brucknerhaus Linz (2004). Since 2020, he has been a member of Künstlerhaus Vienna.

Karlheinz Essl estudou composição com Friedrich Cerha e música electroacústica com Dieter Kaufmann na Musikhochschule de Viena (1981–87), e musicologia e história da arte na Universidade de Viena (doutoramento em 1989 sobre Anton Webern). Tocou contrabaixo até 1984, integrando grupos de câmara e jazz experimental.
Foi compositor residente em Darmstadt (1990–94) e no IRCAM em Paris (1992–93). Leccionou Composição Algorítmica em Linz (1995–2006) e, desde 2007, é professor de composição electroacústica e experimental na Universidade de Música de Viena. De 1992 a 2016, foi curador musical do Museu Essl.
Trabalha com composição algorítmica, arte generativa e instalações sonoras, desenvolvendo software como a Real Time Composition Library e o ambiente m@ze°2. Colabora regularmente com artistas de outras áreas, como Harald Naegeli, Jonathan Meese, Vibeke Sorensen e, mais recentemente, Andrea Nagl e Erwin Uhrmann.
Compositor multifacetado, a sua obra abrange música instrumental, electrónica e improvisação. Foi destacado em festivais como WIEN MODERN (1989), Festival de Salzburgo (1997) e Brucknerhaus Linz (2004). Desde 2020 é membro da Künstlerhaus Vienna.
