In the feels…
TECHNO 2024
it took me a while to reflect, and now after a three month hiatus I‘m back on social media with a simple question:
what is techno in 2024?
as much as technomusic (and all it’s sub-genres) always has been the most suitable way to prove skills as a dj throughout all these decades, probably not only to me it seems like the whole dj-circuit has become a circus with monkeys dressed up as dj‘s, faking an artform that has meant and still means so much to the originators and follow ups who had the luck to experience a time when music only was the way to express yourself behind the decks that meant the world to us.
I never thought this would happen to me, but I totally lost interest in djing - at least on a level on which you have to pay the price of having to share the stage with people lacking on skills in a musical context but gaining recognition and popularity by focussing on everything else but trying to leave an musical fingerprint. as long as there is the chance to make fans by wearing scandalous outfits, behaving like a clown, waving hair and arms, why should you waste time on boring, demanding duties like music-digging, improving mixing skills or even producing your own musical heritage?
I know that also the audience has changed. the kids want to take the easy road. cheap 90ish rave music, sounding like these cheesy records we dj‘s left on the shelves in the tecordstores back then when so much better, deeper and more artful music was released. there is still lots of good music coming these days. but why don‘t I hear it in the sets of the gen-z dj‘s?
I‘m so lucky that I have experienced the golden times of nightlife and clubbing and I’m looking forward to playing some vinyls from time to time again after refusing quite some options throughout recent months simply because it would have annoyed me too much to be squeezed into a lineup I wouldn‘t have felt I really belong to. better not to play as having the feeling of having to play…
so, what is techno in 2024? what is djing in 2024? I don‘t know. maybe you do?
