On this day in music – August 27, 1991
Pearl Jam released their debut studio album, Ten, through Epic Records. After the heartbreaking end of Mother Love Bone in 1990, bassist Jeff Ament and guitarist Stone Gossard kept the music alive, teaming up with guitarist Mike McCready. With drummer Matt Cameron, they recorded a five-song instrumental demo that would set everything in motion. That demo found its way to drummer Dave Krusen and vocalist Eddie Vedder—who flew up to Seattle, auditioned, and completed the lineup.
Many of the songs on Ten started as instrumental jams or reimagined Mother Love Bone pieces, with Vedder pouring his own soul into new lyrics and melodies. What came out of those sessions at London Bridge Studio with producer Rick Parashar and the band themselves was a record that changed the sound of the ‘90s forever.
