Ballet Manila’s “Paquita” marks the first time the ballet is being presented as a full length in the Philippines and the world premiere of Lisa Macuja Elizalde’s choreography based on the original by Joseph Mazilier, Pierre Malavergne, and Marius Petipa.

Paquita’s story begins in mystery. A young girl raised by gypsies; unaware of her true identity. When love enters the picture, so does the truth.

It is a story that is sure to appeal to every Filipino’s sentimental side!

"Paquita" is one of Lisa Macuja Elizalde's favorite ballets. That it has never been performed in full in the Philippines made it a natural inclusion in the PRIMA Performance Season - one curated from pieces special to her.

"It is a romp of a tale - deceit, adventure, love - set in Spain when it was occupied by the French. The staging will be visually arresting and in trademark Ballet Manila-style, the dancing spirited, technically demanding, yet still intrinsically graceful.", says the prima ballerina.

"Paquita" is the second offering in Ballet Manila's PRIMA performance season where each ballet was chosen by the prima ballerina for very personal reasons.

Ballet Manila has performed excerpts of "Paquita" over its 31 years - it was the finale of the company's first ever concert in 1995! It is bravura ballet at its very best and will showcase the company's Russian Vaganova training. Technical virtuosity and expressive movement will be in full display.

The world premiere of Lisa Macuja Elizalde's version of this classic will also mark the first time the full length ballet is performed in the Philippines.
