Agkatay ka ditoy. Salivating on shellfish. Have yet to try the big one. I might grill, thinking spices, fresh, very Ilokano but also a bit international. Possibilities are endless when you’re hungry. Palengke day is discovery day for the kitchen lab. Though it was unfortunate that the fire incinerated the entire San Fernando market, it’s refreshing to walk around it in open air, unrestricted by roof and dim lights. I hope the next palengke design proves to be more innovative this time around.

Interesting finds on a Valentine’s Day at the market. “Igat” kanu said the lady seller. Supposedly good stewed in coconut milk. I have not tried to be honest but sure does pique my curiosity.

Mais from Mameltac in San Ferr, La Union. I dunno how to describe it, feels like a juicy kind of adjective but prolly not the best word, but snack that we can’t get enough of, morning, noon, night (oops), will have this anytime, so many times 🤣. I suddenly remember my Pops in Pangasinan, they also have the best mais.

“Diay babassit nga pasayann ket kurus dagidiay kasla armang”, verbatim from Luisa, my mother the Ilokano food expert in the Bistro. Warning, this is addictive, if you don’t want unli rice, don’t start 😅, might not get out of the habit 😂. As usual, another discovery day at the kitchen lab.

It looks like rice grain but it’s not. This grows along the pathway to the beach. So many things are so resilient down the path, and I hope it will continue to be so. I just wish we realise this as well. Sister Earth can only take so much.

Wondering if this is Ms Rumphius’ lupines. When you enter the Bistro from the beach, you will be greeted with these wildflowers. Hopefully, when the ‘rona is gone, there will be more to make the world more beautiful, just as Ms Rumphius and her grandpa had hoped for.

I had to come out, the sunset was beckoning, appearing so huge on our window. Sorry for the lousy take. But it was a huge yolk and I couldn’t be bothered to watch where I was going. I just needed to take the sunset, the splashing waves, the wind blowing, all in, right at that moment. It was my space in time. Once again, another evening at the Bistro.

We are always proud of our heritage, so we weren’t disappointed when we sampled Pagdalagan’s lemon grass tea fused with black tea and sweetened by Vigan “Balicucha”. It wasn’t overpowering like how lemon grass usually is (according to me), but it was a mild, appealing taste. I love how I can breathe in the fragrance through the palate. The “balicucha” gives it a natural sweetness, without any aftertaste. We will be serving this to anyone who would want a taste of the local San Ferr product, after Covid of course. We hope to sample more soon, because good friends gave us Christmas bags.
