Good day, GROWers! Here are Alliyah Avellanosa, Ramielle Aire Usman, and Mark Jay Mendoza of BSHM 4-1N to show us how to plant okra and its benefits in our health.

Okra is a flowering plant known for its edible seed pods. It’s cultivated in warm and tropical climates, such as those in Africa and South Asia. Sometimes referred to as “lady’s finger,” okra comes in two colors: red and green. Both varieties taste the same, and the red one turns green when cooked. Biologically classified as a fruit, okra is generally utilized like a vegetable in cooking. It’s frequently used in Southern American cuisine and a popular addition to gumbo. Yet, it can have a slimy texture, which some people find unappealing. Though it’s not one of the most common foods, okra is packed with nutrition.

Benefits of Okra
1. Okra is rich in many nutrients and particularly high in vitamins C and K. This fruit is unique, as it provides protein, a nutrient that many other fruits and vegetables lack.
2. Okra is rich in antioxidants that may reduce your risk of serious diseases, prevent inflammation, and contribute to overall health. Most notably, it contains polyphenols that may contribute to heart and brain health.
3. Okra may bind to cholesterol in your gut and lower blood cholesterol levels. It’s also rich in polyphenols, which fight harmful inflammation and protect your heart.
4. Okra contains a protein called lectin, which is being studied for its role in cancer prevention and treatment. More human research is needed.
5. Eating okra has been linked to blood sugar control. Yet, some research suggests that it may interfere with common diabetes medications.
6. Eating okra may help pregnant women meet their daily folate needs. Folate is important for preventing neural tube defects.

Good day, GROWers! Here are Sharmaine De Paz, Rei Zyrene Dumaguit, and Tonette Paguio to show us the Tipid Tip in growing our own food using waste bell pepper seed and its benefits to
our health.

Bell peppers (Capsicum annuum) are fruits that belong to the nightshade family. They are related to chili peppers, tomatoes, and breadfruit, all of which are native to Central and South America. Also called sweet peppers or capsicums, bell peppers can be eaten either raw or cooked. Like their close relatives, chili peppers, bell peppers are sometimes dried and powdered. In that case, they are referred to as paprika. Bell peppers come in various colors, such as red, yellow, orange, and green — which are unripe. Green, unripe peppers have a slightly bitter flavor and are not as sweet as fully ripe ones.

Bell peppers are rich in many vitamins and antioxidants, especially vitamin C and various carotenoids. For this reason, they may have several health benefits, such as improved eye health and reduced risk of several chronic diseases. All in all, bell peppers are an excellent addition to a healthy diet.

Good day, GROWers! Here are Sofia Eimar, Marian Perez, and Hans Delmar of BSHM 4-1N to show us the different types of fertilizers we can use in growing our own food.

Fertilizers are used daily by farmers and families to help crops and gardens grow. Whether for a small garden of flowers and plants, or a large farm with thousands of acres of crops, a wide range of fertilizers have been developed to help different crops grow in different soil and weather conditions. Fertilizers provide crops with nutrients like potassium, phosphorus, and nitrogen, which allow crops to grow bigger, faster, and to produce more food. Nitrogen in particular is an essential nutrient for the growth of every organism on Earth. Nitrogen is all around us and makes up about 78% of the air you breathe. However, plants and animals cannot
use the nitrogen gas in the air. To grow, plants require nitrogen compounds from the soil, which can be produced naturally or be provided by fertilizers.

However, applying excessive amounts of fertilizer leads to the release of harmful greenhouse gases into the atmosphere and the eutrophication of our waterways. Scientists are currently trying to find solutions to reduce the environmentally harmful effects of fertilizers, without reducing the amount of food we can produce when using them.

What’s up GROWers! Here are Marc Joshua Navarro, Ace Buencamino, Michael Edward Castro of BSHM 4-1N to show us the two types of fertilizers we can use in growing our own food.

1. Water and MSG
2. Banana Peel

MSG is good as plant fertilizer as it contains:
- high level of nitrogen, phosphorus, and potassium.
- trace elements such as ammonium, sulfate, calcium, magnesium, organic matter.
- a variety of amino acids which are needed for plant growth.

Banana Peel is good fertilizer because of: What they do not contain. They contain absolutely no nitrogen. Banana peels also contain calcium, which prevents blossom end rot in tomatoes. The manganese in banana peels aids photosynthesis, while the sodium in banana peels helps water flow between cells
