Iloilo City Cooling Hub: My Thoughts
This repurposed container van serves as a cooling station for passersby seeking relief from the intense outdoor heat. While the concept is commendable in intent, there are more environmentally friendly approaches to cooling that could have been explored. That said, I appreciate the effort and here are my observations.
Areas for Improvement
First, metal is a natural heat conductor, and the enclosed structure, ventilated by only a small air-conditioning unit, is unlikely to generate sufficient cooling for occupants. This is, ironically, the very purpose the hub was built to serve.
Second, the absence of a CCTV camera is a notable concern. As a public space, security should be a top priority, and surveillance equipment is a basic necessity.
Third, there appears to be no designated restroom facility for the staff. Given that they are on duty from 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m., the lack of a clear arrangement for comfort breaks is an oversight that needs to be addressed.
Positive Observations
On a brighter note, the hub offers free, clean drinking water, a practical and welcome amenity. Additionally, the presence of personnel who assist visitors and provide blood pressure monitoring is a thoughtful touch that adds real value to the station's purpose. Perhaps most notably, the hub runs on solar-powered energy, which is a commendable step toward sustainability and responsible resource use.
A Better Alternative?
One has to wonder whether a simpler solution could have been more effective. Given that the area is naturally breezy and windy, upgrading the existing waiting shed with mist-cooling fans might have been a more practical and cost-efficient approach. Not only would it provide adequate relief from the heat, but it would also make it far easier for commuters to board public transport, no doors to deal with, just open, accessible, and convenient.
Share Your Thoughts
What do you think? Have you visited any of Iloilo's cooling hubs? The one I personally visited are located along Diversion Road in Mandurriao. The other two are located at Plazoleta Gay and near Jalandoni Bridge in the City Proper. I would love to hear your experiences and insights.
