Japan Public Holidays 2026 🎌

Japan has 16 official national holidays in a regular year, and there are none in June or December.

🌸If you’re visiting Japan, this information will help you plan your trips more efficiently:

👉Most holidays are just one day but often turn into 3 to 4 day breaks. Japan gives substitute holidays if a holiday falls on Sunday, and has “bridge holidays” between two holidays.

👉In Japan, public holidays are often busy travel periods, especially Golden Week from late April to early May, which is the longest and most crowded holiday season.

👉Most tourist attractions such as museums and temples, along with shops and restaurants, stay open during these holidays.

👉In July and August, school summer holidays take place, and Obon also brings heavy traffic and large travel crowds.

✨Obon is a major celebration across Japan that isn’t an official holiday, yet it feels like the whole country is on break, and most employees still get about four days off.

💗If you plan to visit during the public holidays, make sure to book everything in advance and be ready for large crowds.

Difference Between Sakura, Ume and Momo 🌸

They may look similar at first glance, but each of these beautiful Japanese blossoms has its own charm and meaning ✨

🌸 Sakura (Cherry Blossom)
Soft, delicate petals with a light pink hue. Sakura blooms signal spring and are all about beauty, new beginnings, and how fleeting life can be.

🌺 Ume (Plum Blossom)
Often mistaken for sakura, but ume blooms earlier. Sometimes even in late winter! Their petals are rounder and they have a stronger, sweet fragrance. Symbol of resilience and strength 💪

🍑 Momo (Peach Blossom)
Brighter pink and slightly more vibrant than sakura. Momo blossoms are linked to love, femininity, and protection in Japanese culture 💕
