This little boy has three biological parents... And it may have saved his life. ❤️
In 2016, doctors helped a Jordanian couple welcome the world's first baby born using DNA from three people.
It sounds unbelievable. But the science had one goal: To stop a devastating inherited disease.
The boy's mother carried genes linked to Leigh syndrome, a rare mitochondrial disorder that had already caused the heartbreaking loss of two of her children.
Doctors used a groundbreaking procedure called mitochondrial replacement. The baby inherited almost all of his DNA from his mother and father... Plus a tiny amount of healthy mitochondrial DNA from a female donor.
That donor DNA doesn't determine things like eye color, personality, or appearance.
Its job was simply to provide healthy mitochondria, helping prevent the child from inheriting the same life-threatening condition.
The procedure became known around the world as the "three-parent baby" technique, even though the donor contributed only a very small fraction of the child's total DNA.
Reports at the time said the baby was healthy, giving hope to families carrying severe mitochondrial diseases.
Since then, other babies have reportedly been born using similar techniques as scientists continue exploring ways to prevent inherited genetic disorders.
Sometimes, one tiny piece of DNA... Can change an entire family's future.
