# The Life and Martyrdom of Saint Valentine
Saint Valentine was a Christian priest living in Rome during the 3rd century AD, when Emperor Claudius II ruled. Claudius II was engaged in several bloody and unpopular campaigns, and he believed that single men made better soldiers because they didn't have family obligations.
To address this, Claudius II outlawed marriage for young men, believing it would increase their willingness to fight. Saint Valentine defied the emperor's decree and continued to perform marriages in secret, believing that love and marriage were sacred.
When Emperor Claudius II discovered this, he had Valentine arrested and put in prison. During his imprisonment, Saint Valentine is said to have healed the daughter of his jailer and converted her and others to Christianity.
Before his ex*****on, Saint Valentine wrote a letter to the jailer's daughter, signing it "From your Valentine," which is where the modern-day expression comes from.
On February 14, around 270 AD, Saint Valentine was executed outside the Flaminian Gate in Rome. According to legend, he was beaten, stoned, and then beheaded.
