INDUSTRY LOOKOUT: MARSEILLE, France – Shipping giant CMA CGM has submitted a bid to acquire Air Belgium’s cargo operations after a Belgian court revoked Air One Belgium’s planned takeover of the struggling airline.

The bid, which will be reviewed by the Walloon Brabant Business Court on March 27, includes acquiring Air Belgium’s cargo division, retaining its brand, and taking over its four aircraft. The court has given Air Belgium until that date to secure an investor or face liquidation.

Air One Belgium, a joint venture between PESO Aviation Management and Air One Holding International, has appealed the court’s decision, with a hearing set for April 3.

CMA CGM Air Cargo, launched in 2021, operates four freighters and is expanding its fleet with two additional Boeing 777Fs this year and eight Airbus A350Fs from 2026.

INDUSTRY LOOKOUT: China dominates the global shipbuilding industry, accounting for 62% of all new ship orders, according to Greek shipbroking firm Intermodal. With 3,454 vessels under construction, totaling 175.4 million gross tons, China far surpasses its closest competitors, South Korea and Japan, which hold 21.39% and 8.83% of the global orderbook, respectively. The surge in clean-fuel-powered ships has driven demand, with the world’s dual-fuel fleet now surpassing 2,100 vessels.

In contrast, U.S. shipbuilding remains a fraction of the global industry, with just 52 vessels on order. The U.S. Trade Representative (USTR) has criticized China's maritime dominance, calling it “unreasonable” and harmful to U.S. commerce. In response, Washington has proposed a $1.5 million fee on Chinese-built ships entering U.S. ports and unveiled plans to revitalize domestic shipbuilding. Former President Donald Trump announced a sweeping initiative to boost military and commercial ship production, including tax incentives and the creation of a new Office of Shipbuilding in the White House.

Following Trump’s announcement, French shipping giant CMA CGM pledged a $20 billion investment in U.S. maritime transport and logistics. Meanwhile, China’s foreign ministry warned that U.S. tariffs would disrupt global supply chains without necessarily reviving American shipbuilding. The growing trade tensions highlight the geopolitical battle for control of the shipbuilding industry, a sector crucial to international trade and economic security.

INDUSTRY LOOKOUT: MANILA – The owner of an oil tanker has pledged to cover all expenses related to the death of Filipino seafarer Junry Popera, who was fatally struck by an anchor chain while the vessel was in Indonesia on March 10. Another Filipino crew member, Romulo Gollayan, sustained injuries and was hospitalized.

Popera and Gollayan, both boat fitters, were sent to a chain hole to recover a stuck anchor when the chain loosened and struck them. Popera died after taking most of the impact, while Gollayan survived with injuries.

Popera’s wife, Elsie, said the shipowner has committed to shouldering all costs, including repatriation and insurance claims. She is in discussions with the local manning agency and the Overseas Workers Welfare Administration (OWWA) for further assistance.

Elsie believes the accident could have been prevented and is considering legal action. Meanwhile, Popera’s remains remain in Indonesia for autopsy as coordination with authorities continues.

PROUD PINOY! Twelve Filipino seafarers were honored by the Maritime Administrator of the Republic of the Marshall Islands as part of the crew of the Marshall Islands-flagged tanker Owl 5, led by Captain Kondrate Gvadzabia. The crew received a Certificate of Commendation for their "exceptional seamanship and professionalism" in a successful medical evacuation at sea on May 12, 2024.

While en route from Tarragona, Spain, to New York, Owl 5 responded to an urgent distress call from the Maritime Rescue Coordination Center (MRCC) Delgada, assisting a severely ill crewmember aboard a sailing vessel. The team swiftly diverted course, safely brought the individual on board, and coordinated a successful transfer to a rescue helicopter off Terceira Island.

The Filipino crew members recognized for their bravery and dedication are Pumpman Pascual Juvie, Bosun Cuento Jerickson, A/B Fernandez Fradedcel, A/B Delfin Rene Jr., A/B Maynigo Geronimo Jr., O/S Azcarraga Sixto, O/C Elumba Brayan, Oiler Indico John Ian, Oiler Jandoc Edgardo, Chief Cook Vacaro Delfin, Messboy Estrella Christian, and Fitter Deocampo Erwin.

This recognition highlights the vital role of seafarers in ensuring maritime safety and commitment to protecting lives at sea.
