PROUD PINOY! Twelve Filipino seafarers were honored by the Maritime Administrator of the Republic of the Marshall Islands as part of the crew of the Marshall Islands-flagged tanker Owl 5, led by Captain Kondrate Gvadzabia. The crew received a Certificate of Commendation for their "exceptional seamanship and professionalism" in a successful medical evacuation at sea on May 12, 2024.
While en route from Tarragona, Spain, to New York, Owl 5 responded to an urgent distress call from the Maritime Rescue Coordination Center (MRCC) Delgada, assisting a severely ill crewmember aboard a sailing vessel. The team swiftly diverted course, safely brought the individual on board, and coordinated a successful transfer to a rescue helicopter off Terceira Island.
The Filipino crew members recognized for their bravery and dedication are Pumpman Pascual Juvie, Bosun Cuento Jerickson, A/B Fernandez Fradedcel, A/B Delfin Rene Jr., A/B Maynigo Geronimo Jr., O/S Azcarraga Sixto, O/C Elumba Brayan, Oiler Indico John Ian, Oiler Jandoc Edgardo, Chief Cook Vacaro Delfin, Messboy Estrella Christian, and Fitter Deocampo Erwin.
