The United Nations' Children's Rights and Emergency Relief Organization reports that the Philippines has an estimated 1.8 million children who are "abandoned or neglected" while some are victims of extreme poverty, still others of natural disasters, and armed conflicts (UNCREO, as cited by Kaiman and De Leon, 2016).
“Orphan”- a child deprived by death of one or usually both parents
"Neglect" is defined as "the ongoing failure to meet a child's basic needs and is the most common form of child abuse," according to the National Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Children. The United Nations International Children's Emergency Fund estimates that there are as many as eight million children growing up in institutional settings worldwide.
Neglect carries with it problems like poor impulse control, social withdrawal, problems with coping, and regulating emotions, low self-esteem, and pathological behaviors such as tics, tantrums, stealing and self punishment.
Abandonment, on the other hand, means children are raised with chronic loss, without the psychological or physical protection they need and certainly deserve, it is most natural for them to internalize incredible fear, according to Psychology Today.
