Did you know that the original idea for Panama Canal is 500 years old?
In 1513 the Spanish conqueror Vasco Núñez de Balboa crossed the Isthmus and discovered that only a very narrow strip of land part the two oceans. Later in 1533, Gaspar de Espinosa suggested excavating the Canal next to the river Chagres, but very soon after he died. Later Carlos I, the Spanish king, produced the decree to build the Canal, but later understood that it's impossible.
So what we now witness and enjoy, became the idée fixe in the mind of humankind very long before the first shovel was put into the ground of Isthmus. #
