There's a real buzz building about the arrival of the Andrew London Trio in Whitianga this Friday. There will be here as part of the Creative Mercury Bay Arts On Tour programme for 2017. I've been listening to to one of their original songs, and anyone who has ever seen this scene unfolding will be able to relate. The song is called "Two Words" and you will very quickly be able to figure what those words are. The band is playing at a gig (this scenario often happens at a wedding), and there is a guest who may or may not have had too much to drink. In the worst case scenario this somewhat inebriated guest might have once played in a band. This qualifies him as an expert, and he wants to engage the guitarist in a detailed and often technical discussion about the various merits of this or that piece of gear. The guitarist meanwhile is trying to sing and play guitar. Invariably the guest will have an opinion on the repertoire and as a Metallica or AC/DC fan there might sometimes be a difference of opinion on what song should come next on the playlist.
The Andrew London Trio songs are real toe tapping acoustic swing, with witty and hilarious lyrics and a real Kiwi jazz flavour to them. They are certain to be a highlight of the programme for this year.
Tickets are available from Paper Plus in Albert St., adults $20, under 18 $10. Starts at 7pm in the Town Hall.
