An historically rich space first established to hold all key facilities of the town in the early 1900’s including the library, cinema and council chambers.
The design has evolved over the years with various iterations and models being applied to the historic whare. In November 2017 the venue closed following a seismic assessment that identified the building as earthquake prone.
In 2020, construction will begin to transform the building into a state-of-the-art regional performing arts facility known as the Sir Howard Morrison Performing Arts Centre.
