On tonight's Vinyl&Proud radio show we're following on from last month's show about the 20 Solid Gold Hits phenomenon that hit Aotearoa in the 1970s right up to the 80s.

We're going to be talking to our special guest and friend Mandy Preston, whose Dad, Alec Mowat was in charge of 'local repertoire', talent spotting and schmoozing new artists and supporting their studio auditions at HMV, and later EMI in Wellington, as well as hosting overseas musicians and bands that toured NZ.

Mandy and her sister got to meet some super famous people and bands - we'll let her tell you about that.

We'll play a selection of songs from artists and albums Alec helped to make best-sellers in the 60s and 70s.

It's May, and that means one thing... It's Te Marama Puoro o Aotearoa New Zealand Music Month!

On this month's Vinyl&Proud radio show we're diving into our '20 Solid Gold Hits' collection - one of the most successful pop compilations in New Zealand. Did you know it was created by kiwi John McCready, a music promoter and eventual CEO of Mowtown Records UK?

Each record featured a kiwi artist in amongst the top hit bands and songs of the time. It was a genius way to get New Zealand Music into the mainstream.

We'll play some of the kiwi offerings from our collection and chat about the phenomenon that this collection was during the 70s and 80s.

If you ever see these in your crate digging missions, grab them - they're becoming more collectable than ever.

On this month's Vinyl&Proud radio show we pay tribute to Dilworth Karaka, founding member and frontman of iconic Aotearoa band Herbs, who passed away last month.

Herbs was an influential band in the political and social landscape in this country during the turbulent 80s. Their music gave voice to a generation fighting for justice for Maori land rights, apartheid, and nuclear testing in the Pacific. We'll play some music from our collection of Herbs' incredible catalogue of albums as well as an interview we did with Dilworth after a concert in Ōtaki in 2018 that we were lucky to attend.

We're joined in the studio by local Paekākāriki legends Mark and Sarah TeOne to talk about Mark's very special record collection and his recollections of Herbs and other favourite Aotearoa bands.

Dilworth Karaka, founding member and frontman of the New Zealand band Herbs, has died.
