Looking to include handfasting in your ceremony? Our top tips have got you covered…

🤝 What is handfasting?

Handfasting is an ancient Celtic marriage ritual and is thought to be where the expression ‘tying the knot’ came from. Many couples include handfasting as part of their legal wedding and it can also be a great option for a symbolic ceremony or vow renewal.

Handfasting involves the wrapping of cord, ribbon or cloth around your hands as a visual demonstration of your marriage. The knot or knots that are then created symbolise the binding of your union.

✍️ TOP TIPS! ✍️

- we recommend that each length of material is at least 1.5 metres long, ideally 2 metres.

- as well as being a lovely symbolic gesture, handfasting can also make a great keepsake after the wedding. You can display your knotted material in your home - in a box frame for example.

- want to personalise the material you use? You could use something that belongs, or belonged, to loved ones, e.g. a grandmother’s scarf or grandfather’s tie.

Love this quote…

Right then, we put up an Insta post a few weeks that went viral of the lovely Jeff Goldblum remembering a quote by George Bernard Shaw about valuing life for its own sake.

It's been wonderful seeing our follower counts grow as a result of this. We now have more Instagram followers in New York than Glasgow. What a world!

It's also been lovely seeing the comments that the Shaw quote has inspired. This is one of our favourite, from a 93 year old. You go Jeanne! Here's to never giving up on life

Just the loveliest couple yesterday at Neidpath, Sarah and David, who had Tolkein‘s song of the entwife as a centrepiece of their story. They will be able to write their own love story in years to come. Married forever.

I am so happy to be one those celebrants with HSS, lifelong authorisation and to be in such good company with so many great celebrants .

Scotland is one of the few countries in the world where humanist marriages are legally recognised, thanks to years of campaigning by Humanist Society Scotland members.

But a lack of regulation of their own marriage law by government agencies has allowed individuals to pose as “humanist” celebrants without meeting the legal standards required of a genuine belief body, and without any link whatsoever to us.

We’re proud to have spent over 20 years providing meaningful, personal humanist ceremonies and remain the only non-religious organisation with permanent authorisation from the Scottish Parliament to do so.

HSS has repeatedly raised concerns with the government and National Records of Scotland, calling for urgent reform and proper oversight.

Now, The Sunday Post’s investigation lays bare the consequences of a decade of inaction.
