From the Phoenix Astronomical society
Our next monthly meeting is this Saturday 13 December BUT it starts at 5.30pm. This is one and a half hour earlier than normal.
Why - simple! Tis our Xmas meeting where we meet to have a shared meal so consider bringing something savory and something sweet to share along with conversation and enjoyment. We will have a BBQ available along with the Hall facilities, if you wish to heat anything. After which we will consider the various presentations we received in a review of the year, to be followed by a repeat screening of Michelle Thaller's presentation on "Searching for Life Outside the Earth: Intriguing Discoveries and Next Steps".
The meeting will be held at the West Taratahi Hall, 713 Chester Road, Carterton with the 5.30pm start time allowing time to have the shared meal before we consider the year's activity from about 7pm.
Should the weather be favourable on Saturday night, we will include night sky observation so we encourage you to bring your telescope or binoculars and is also an opportunity to raise any matters related to observation or equipment you wish to discuss. Do bring warm clothing and headwear, and do anticipate moisture. Current night temperatures are better reaching up to 14 degrees Celsius but there remains a potential chill factor of 1-3 degrees Celsius..
As always we will have coffee and tea available, and we anticipate good conversation over a range of subjects so we welcome any prospective or non-members who choose to attend.
West Taratahi Hall is easily accessed with plenty of parking. Access from the North is through Norfolk Road, turning right at the Waingawa roundabout, while access from the South is by turning left into Chester Road at its intersection with SH2 at Clareville near the Wairarapa A&P Showgrounds.
The image below reflects one of the deep sky objects NGC 6744 a spiral galaxy currently visible within Pavo constellation when viewing conditions are favourable.
TPAS is Wairarapa based, particularly Carterton, while its membership includes the wider regions.
