Happy , flower freaks.

We have spent the last 2 days with a little sick doggo. I don’t know what it is about dogs, but why is it they get sick at night, or on Christmas Day?! Like, dude, can we do this in business hours please 🫠 Jokes aside, sick pets are so stressful. It’s so hard watching your little buddies in distress 😫

He’s on the mend now, thankfully. Shout out to after hours at Massey vets in Palmerston North. They were beyond awesome (thanks, Richard from Puerto Rico … hope the weather improves for you here soon ☀️).

I’ll be back to digging the last of the dahlias now. They’re looking awesome 🤩 bring on the tuber sale August 30th!

Instagram shows the bloom, not the bruising.

And sometimes, that can make it feel like everyone else is getting it right while you’re out here dealing with a total sh*tshow.

Here’s 6 things you didn’t know you needed to hear today.

I want to get slightly off topic for a second.

A lot of you beautiful people have been messaging me about the current show I’m in with the Ōtaki Players. Is it suitable for all ages? Is there coarse language? What’s it actually about?

Jagged Little Pill is an Alanis Morissette musical, so it’s packed with those awesome songs that’ll take you straight back to the 90s 🖤

It follows the Healy family as they navigate life, relationships, addiction, identity, trauma, and all the messy things that happen when people stop pretending everything is okay. Because of the themes it explores, there are a few trigger warnings attached.

I’ve been in a few shows before now. An apostle in Jesus Christ Superstar. A suffragette in That Bloody Woman. Velma Kelly in Chicago. Those shows were brilliant fun, but they all involved a certain amount of pretending.

Jagged Little Pill is different.

It’s real.

The character I play, Mary Jane Healy, battles addiction and carries far more than anyone around her realises. While addiction isn’t part of my own story. Struggle is.

There are moments in this show where I don’t have to imagine what it feels like to be overwhelmed, exhausted, at rock bottom, hurting, or trying to hold everything together while convincing the world you’re fine. I can remember.

Different circumstances. Different battles. Same very human emotions. That’s what makes this show so powerful.

It doesn’t tell a story about perfect people. It tells a story about human beings. It’s raw. It’s super uncomfortable at times. It’s funny. It’s heartbreaking. It’s hopeful.

And if you’ve ever found yourself at rock bottom, rebuilding, carrying things quietly, or wondering how much longer you could keep all the balls in the air… there’s a good chance you’ll recognise a little bit of yourself somewhere in it too.

So yes, there are some difficult themes. But there is also healing, connection, understanding, and one hell of a soundtrack.

I honestly think it’s one of the most important stories I’ve ever had the privilege of helping tell. 🖤

So, should you go?! Hell yes!

🖤 Things got out of hand.

A few years ago I planted some flowers. Now there are thousands of flowers, a roadside shop, workshops, weddings, photography, a website, and tuber packaging decisions. 🤪

Somewhere along the way, Feral Flower Farm stopped being just the place we grew our flowers… it became its own thing.

So over the next little while you’ll start seeing a few tiny refinements to the Feral Flower Farm brand. Some new packaging (yes, the days of sending tubers out in paper bags are coming to an end 😆), a little shop makeover 🤩, and a few fun things I’ve been quietly working on behind the scenes.

The heart of it isn’t changing.

We’re still local. We’re still growing flowers without sprays. We’re still a little (okay, a LOT) wild around the edges.

If anything, the new look just feels a little more like us. 😎

Thanks for being part of the journey. 🖤

Stay feral. 🤘🏼

It’s been such a crazy year. Most of the time I’ve felt like I was flying by the seat of my pants 😂

The feature articles on the farm, and a recent project, have forced me to stop and reflect on this whole flower journey… which is mostly good… but also sometimes kinda painful.

The show I’m involved in at the moment (Ōtaki Players Jagged Little Pill - tickets $30, on sale now 😜) has also been bringing a few things to the surface. Funny how art does that. It has a way of shining a light into places you thought you’d already cleaned out.

Anyways… It’s had me thinking a lot about how I got here.

The flower farm. The businesses. The confidence to be myself. The life I’ve built.

None of it appeared overnight.

A lot of it grew from seasons that didn’t feel particularly beautiful at the time. Maybe one day I’ll share more of that story. For now, I’m learning that growth isn’t always pretty when you’re in the middle of it. Sometimes it feels messy. Sometimes it hurts. Sometimes you don’t realise how far you’ve come until something forces you to stop and look back.

I spotted this little rabbit sitting quietly amongst the dahlias a while back and it felt like a reminder that I don’t need to have everything figured out today.

Sometimes it’s enough to simply pause, catch your breath, and notice how far you’ve already come. Those past versions of ourselves… the ones who dragged us through the s**t, carried us when we were exhausted, and refused to give up… they’re the real heroes. 🖤
