📷 PIC OF THE WEEK - UMBRELLAS LIHTEN THE DAY 📷

Rainy wedding photos don’t have to feel like Plan B.

This shot of Finland and Kurt’s wedding party at Abel Estate in June 2023 makes the weather part of the image instead of something to hide. The white umbrellas add shape, height and a bit of personality, while the group’s expressions keep it relaxed rather than too posed.

The rotunda in the background gives the photo structure, and the wet paving adds a soft reflection that lifts the whole frame. It’s clean, bright and genuinely fun, which isn’t always what people expect from a winter wedding day.

It also shows why having strong photo spots close to the venue matters. When the weather changes, you can still move quickly, keep everyone comfortable, and get photos that feel like they belong to the day.

As Kurt said, even when the weather forced things inside, the ceremony still felt “deeply intimate, personal and beautiful.”

The umbrellas just helped tell the story properly.

🌿 ROUND TABLES, BETTER CONNECTED 🌿

Round tables don’t have to make a room feel broken into little islands.

For this Abel Estate set-up, venue stylist Nadine used a snaking table design to pull the room together, with soft fabric running through the tables and florals by Torey from Florescence_floral tying the whole look into one continuous line.

It keeps the comfort of round tables, but changes the feeling of the room. Guests still have their own space, without feeling cut off from everyone else.

That’s the difference good styling makes. It’s not just about making the tables look pretty. It shapes how the room works.

📷 PIC OF THE WEEK - NO FACES, STILL FULL OF FEELING 📷

You don’t always need the couple looking at the camera to make a photo land.

This shot of Cara and Logan at Abel Estate in October 2022 works because it catches them mid-walk, hand in hand, heading down towards the stream. No posing at the lens. No big expression needed. Just the right moment, framed by the willows, with the light doing half the work.

That’s what gives it its pull. You feel like you’re following them into a quiet part of the day, rather than watching a staged portrait.

It also shows why the grounds matter. The stream, the shade, the trees and the open grass give photographers room to create something softer and more natural without needing to leave the property.

As Cara put it, Abel Estate is “a beautiful, all inclusive venue” and “the perfect blank canvas for that modern vineyard wedding.”

This is exactly that. Simple, spacious, and not trying too hard.

🌿 THE VENUE WITH A VIEW 🌿

A wedding venue should give you something to look at.

At Abel Estate, that does not stop when you step inside. These April shots show the Winery Room doing one of its best jobs - keeping the grounds and lake in view while everyone is seated for the reception.

That matters more than people realise. A room can be beautifully styled and still feel flat if it shuts the outside world out. Here, the long windows keep the gardens, lake and ceremony space part of the day, even once the formalities move indoors.

So yes, the table styling looks polished. The head table is clean, elegant and nicely framed.

But the real win is the view behind it.

📷 PIC OF THE WEEK - LETTING THE VEIL DO THE WORK 📷

Sometimes the best detail in a photo is the one nobody can fully control.

This shot of Janelle and James at Abel Estate in March 2024 works because the breeze turns Janelle’s veil into a leading line. It pulls your eye straight across the frame, from the open space between the poplars back to the couple, without needing anything forced or over-staged.

That space matters. With more than 2ha of grounds, Abel Estate gives photographers room to step back, let the landscape breathe, and catch these bigger, cleaner compositions. Here, the couple still feel intimate, but the setting has scale.

James described Abel Estate as a “Classic and modern garden venue with an iconic lake background in the heart of Kumeu,” and said the “Outdoor setting is outstanding with such diversity which was great for photos!”

This image makes the point neatly. A veil, a bit of wind, and enough room to let the shot happen.

🍂 AUTUMN COLOURS AT ABEL ESTATE 🍂

Autumn has properly arrived at Abel Estate.

The gardens are shifting into those deep reds, golds and soft greens that make this time of year feel completely different on-site. Even with grey skies overhead, the place has a calm, rich look to it - the kind of seasonal colour that gives weddings and events a beautiful natural backdrop without needing much added.

From the lakeside views to the garden paths, it’s a good reminder that Abel Estate is not just a summer venue. Autumn brings its own mood, and it’s a pretty strong one.

📷 PIC OF THE WEEK - LIGHT IN THE RAIN 📷

Winter doesn’t ruin a wedding. It changes how you shoot it.

Finland and Kurt’s June 2023 day at Abel Estate came with classic winter conditions - grey skies, damp ground, everything a bit muted. So instead of fighting it, this shot leans in. A simple lighting effect turns an umbrella into a soft glow, pulling the couple out of the background and creating something far more striking than a standard sunny photo.

That’s the shift most couples miss. Bad weather isn’t a problem if you adapt. As Kurt said, even with the weather closing in, the day still felt “deeply intimate, personal and beautiful”

🦢 A NEW FAMILY ON THE LAKE 🦢

If you’ve been out by the lake at Abel Estate recently, you might have noticed some new residents.

A family of black swans has quietly made themselves at home, gliding across the water and generally stealing the show without trying.

It’s one of those things you can’t plan for, but it adds something special to the setting.

Just another reminder that at Abel Estate, the backdrop isn’t just there for show. It keeps changing.

📷 PIC OF THE WEEK — WINTER GOLD 📷

Winter weddings don’t get enough credit.

Brittany and Connor’s 2023 wedding at Abel Estate is a reminder that colder months bring their own look entirely. The lake reflections, bare trees and late-afternoon light turn everything gold instead of green - softer, moodier, and honestly a bit more cinematic.

This shot works because it leans into the season instead of fighting it. No pretending it’s summer. Just the quiet warmth of winter light bouncing across the lake behind them. Different colour palette, different atmosphere, same romantic Abel Estate backdrop.
