PIRONGIA FOREST POISON DROP

We have received this from EcoFX
Phone 07 873 8130
Email [email protected]

FYI:

Please be advised that the toxic phase of the Pirongia Forest Park & Te Kauri Scenic Reserve aerial pest control operation, will be undertaken on the afternoon of Wednesday 5th November 2025 for the Te Kauri Scenic Reserve and Thursday 6th November 2025 for the Pirongia Forest Park (weather permitting).

This operation is being undertaken to protect our taonga species from the threat of rats and possums. Without ongoing control, we risk losing unique native wildlife and seeing forest health decline. Healthy forests are vital for maintaining the stability of the catchment and reducing the amount of soil eroding into the surrounding rivers and streams and sediment entering Kawhia, Aotea and Raglan Harbours.

These forests are culturally significant, containing mahinga kai and wāhi tapu sites, and provide vital habitat for species such as kākā, pekapeka (long-tailed bats), pua o Te Rēinga (wood rose), kōkako, and kauri.

A map of the treatment area is included in the factsheet attached.

Pesticide to be used: Sodium Fluoroacetate (1080).

Warning signage will be erected at all legal and obvious access points to the treatment areas. A reminder to please check for signage if you are in the area. And;

DO NOT TOUCH poison bait
WATCH CHILDREN at all times
DO NOT EAT animals from the area or within the buffer zone outside the treatment boundary. The standard buffer zone is 2km for deer and pigs, 200m for rabbits, and 1km for hares and possums
Poison bait or carcasses are DEADLY to DOGS

Observe these rules whenever you see warning signs about pesticides. A reminder that the presence of warning signs indicate pesticide residues may be present in baits or animals.

For any urgent queries you can contact Ian Cutler (Aerial Operations Manager) on 021 134 2674.

HALL RE-ROOFING UPDATE

First of all, may we say a big thankyou to everyone in the community who has contributed to this marvellous project. Without your help we'd still be stuck back in Square One, emptying rain-drip buckets, and wondering what to do.

It's getting quite exciting. The plans are approved, the materials have been ordered, the dimensions for the trusses were double-checked on Wednesday, the weather's finally improved, and the work is expected to commence in a couple of weeks, beginning with the er****on of scaffolding.
So we're racing towards the start line!

Although the original funding target of $100,000 has been reached, there's been one or two extra costs for unanticipated things that hadn't been included in the budget, like a safety barrier around the work site (required by Worksafe), hireage of large tarpaulins in case of rain, up-grading of the hall's permanent fire and emergency features etc, so if you know of anyone who is still considering making a donation, but hasn't quite got around to it, please give them a wee nudge!

It'll be a bit chaotic for hall users whilst the work is in progress. Parking space will be reduced, and entry will often have to be through the side or kitchen doors. Also there'll need to be an induction process for visitors and hall users, just like there is for any public space building site, but please bear with us ... before long it'll all be over, and we'll have a brand new leak-proof roof that should last at least another 50 years.

Fingers crossed for dry weather (and not too much wind)!

Te Pahū Hall Roof - Please Donate

THE TE PAHŪ HALL NEEDS A NEW ROOF!

We are now a registered Charity so donations are tax deductible.

The main roof is rusting and needs new iron, and the entrance roof over the foyer and toilets needs a new roof structure.

Estimated cost is just under $100,000

So far we have about $35,000 from fundraising over the years, and $15,000 from recent donations to the project. So we're about half way there.

Please consider making a donation. 😀

More details are in previous posts, the tepahu.co.nz website and the Hall TV Noticeboard.

Please email [email protected], and the Treasurer - Wayne Humphries - will send details.

Thank you!

THE TE PAHŪ HALL NEEDS A NEW ROOF!
The main roof is rusting and needs new iron, and the entrance roof over the foyer and toilets, due to its flatness and general design is plagued with persistent leaks, and would also benefit from new cladding.
The best solution is to build a new gabled roof structure over the foyer and toilets that matches the main roof, and sheds water reliably. It makes sense to also put new tin on the main roof while we are about it.
Plans for the new build have been drawn, materials priced (with discounts arranged) and the design shown to the Council, who have given it the thumbs-up.
As our Hall is owned by the Te Pahū Community, we are eligible to apply for various Community Grants but we will still have to found a significant proportion of the cost ourselves (which currently is estimated total just under $100,000). The Hall Society has some funds saved up for this purpose, but nowhere near enough to complete the job.
This is why we’re asking everyone in the community to consider making a donation to this worthwhile project. As an extra incentive to encourage generosity, it is worth mentioning that, as the Te Pahū Hall is not Council-owned, local ratepayers are not charged the standard Hall Maintenance Levy in their annual Rates demand, that the people in neighbouring districts are required to pay.
A special Hall Society bank account is being set-up for the project, but for those wishing to make an early contribution, please email [email protected], and the Treasurer - Wayne Humphries will direct you to the general purposes account being used in the interim.
