Today in New Zealand history, the cold winter's night of 15 June, 1973, with a light rain falling. So was the Bulls Bridge.

The 24-year-old bridge, meant to last 100 years, had collapsed.

More things fell. Mervyn Farrington, 35, was driving his Weld Motors bus across the Bulls bridge, heading back to Palmerston North after dropping off some charter passengers. They were dropped alright. Into the freezing Rangitikei River!

Without government who would build the bridges?
