She thought her big day would be quiet. She had no idea a Queen was about to walk through that door.

In March 2012, John and Frances Canning — a hairdresser and her fiancé from the small town of Prestwich, Manchester — booked Manchester Town Hall for their wedding. Nothing fancy. Just two people who wanted their moment.

Then, four weeks before the ceremony, the venue called with strange news: they'd be sharing the building that day with "an important VIP."

Turns out that VIP was Queen Elizabeth II herself, in Manchester as part of her Diamond Jubilee tour celebrating 60 years on the throne.

John, half-joking, sat down and wrote a letter to Buckingham Palace. "Hey — since you'll be in the building anyway, want to come to our wedding?"

The reply came back polite but firm: the Queen would not be attending.

So the Cannings shrugged it off, and got on with planning their real wedding day — just them, their families, and about 40 guests.

On March 23, 2012, they said their vows. It was over. Just an ordinary, beautiful moment between two people in love.

Then the staff asked them to wait a moment in the corridor.

Seconds later, John Canning recalled, "the gentleman from the town hall said the Queen had agreed to meet us."

And there she was. Queen Elizabeth II and Prince Philip, walking straight toward the newlyweds — not for a photo op, not for protocol, but to personally congratulate two total strangers on the happiest day of their lives.

John bowed. Frances curtsied. The Queen chatted with them like old friends, wished them well, and posed for photos before slipping back to her official schedule.

One guest was reportedly so stunned they knocked something over — and the Queen, ever gracious, simply asked if they were alright.

Frances later put it simply: "Basically it was a wedding gift for us." She added that the moment was "a bit scary... but she was so nice, she was so gracious."

What makes this story so special isn't just that royalty showed up. It's that the Palace said no — and showed up anyway. It had been quietly arranged all along, just to surprise them.

According to HELLO! Magazine, it remains the only known time a member of the royal family has ever accepted a wedding invitation from a member of the public.

Two ordinary people. One hopeful, half-joking letter. And a queen who decided that "no" didn't mean the story was over.

Sometimes the universe has a wedding gift planned that you never even knew to ask for. 👑💍

After officiating 240 ceremonies - 92 of which have been funerals - last week saw a milestone "first" in my 11 year Celebrant career.

My first funeral for a child - wee Benji aged 6 years.

It was a colourful tribute to a very special young man with an old soul who was loved so very much by all who were blessed to know him.

To receive this feedback on my work from his parents was incredibly humbling:

"Your ceremony was absolutely beautiful ! We love it. You have captured our Benji so perfectly.
We read it out to our family and they completely agree. It really describes our darling."

And from the Funeral Director who I have worked with before:

As a Funeral Celebrant, my primary motivation is to create a meaningful ceremony for my families, that resonates with them as they prepare to farewell their loved one and truly represents the essence of who they were during their lifetime

She glides around so beautifully (and completely unnoticed) as she captures images for her couples, that are so very beautiful and emotive - which will be treasured for the rest of your lives!!
