Dying Matters is a week of community programmes that encourage open conversations about death, dying, end-of-life planning, grief, and loss.

Cheviot's inaugural Death Cafe on Wednesday 16 September is part of this conversation, offering a safe space to talk about all things death and dying.

Everyone's welcome to this free event. There will be cake!

The daffodils in Cheviot Hills Reserve are getting a head start on Spring and are racing towards full bloom.

The reserve is a beautiful setting for a small gathering, an elopement or registry style wedding no matter what season. As a validated celebrant, I am licensed for registry weddings in the Cheviot area so please get in touch if you'd like more information.

Check out cheviotnz.com for other venues, accommodation and services in the area.

One of the many things I enjoy about being a celebrant is the great locations people come up with for their wedding. The smaller the guest list, the more creative the location. Over the last year there have been beaches, hilltops, the rocks at Kura Tawhiti/Castle Hill, beautiful home gardens and even the inside a giant tree.

My list of interesting and creative locations in Hurunui and Te Wai Pounamu, South Island, just keeps growing and there are options for weddings of all sizes. I’m happy to share some ideas for your wedding, especially in Hurunui where you can find venues from luxurious rural lodges to vineyards, quaint community halls and wild places.

Looking for something a little different for your wedding?

When the original wooden Knox church in Cheviot needed replacing, the community collected stones from the Hurunui River to clad the new church which opened in 1953. Now deconsecrated and purchased for the Cheviot community, the church and hall are available for events from weddings and funerals to presentations and festivals.

Check out Cheviotnz.com for flowers, catering, photography and other services.

Registry weddings have come along way since the courthouse days. Couples can now contact a validated celebrant near where they wish to marry; be it a beach, botanic garden or private residence.

Same registry office rules apply; a limited number of guests, weekdays only and a set ceremony script.

What is changing is the price. From 18 June a registry ceremony will cost $175 which is a positive step towards recognising the professionalism of validated celebrants.

Good job BDM!

As a validated celebrant in Cheviot, feel free to ask about a registry ceremony for your wedding.

This magnificent Lawson Cypress has been gently expanding for generations. It is a living breathing family tree that holds space for new relationships and new generations while never letting go of the old.

With dappled light and room for family and friends within its many offshoots, the tree was a supportive sanctuary for a truly beautiful wedding.
