Great to host this important conference @ Marlborough Events Centre.

It was a pleasure to welcome attendees from all over the world to the New Zealand Hydrological Conference here in Blenheim this week.

This year’s theme was ‘Securing Our Water Future’, and it marked the third time Marlborough had played host to the conference, the first time being in 2002, and the last in 2014.

Work on how to secure our water future has never been more important - in New Zealand, ongoing extreme weather events, the impacts of climate change and the need to manage our water resources sustainably, including both quantity and quality, highlight the significant complexities in securing our water future.

Marlborough’s two major rainfall events in 2021 and 2022 went to show the impact climate-change fuelled events can have on our infrastructure and our communities; impacts that continue to be remedied today.

Sustainable utilisation of water is critical to our people and economy. Our mighty Wairau River, the lifeblood of the Wairau Plain, needs to be carefully managed for flood events, but even without such events, it is a direct contributor to the livelihood of our province.

Securing our future will most certainly require both adaptation and collaboration, and it was wonderful to see so many enthusiastic and knowledgable people in one room, ready to discuss these issues throughout the conference this week.
