Big disaster movie fan tbh…

🪏 I’m digging up my dahlia tubers to split and store over winter (not a necessity for the weather but for space) and this beauty is going to be a goodie for next season.

💥 Deep Impact is a Fubuki Dahlia which has serrated and semi-frilled florets. Basically that means very pretty petals! And the colour… Earth shattering! 😂

Another NZ native that gives colour while the weather really cools down! This gorgeous bright red Mānuka (Leptospermum) is a real beauty and a prolific flowerer.

A great one for floral work and in arrangements because it’s a hardy evergreen shrub - so whether for the flowers or the foliage, it’s always on hand!

Tulip time! Exciting moment when these things go in the ground because it means we will have lots of gorgeous colour in just a few months! Bring on spring!

I have so many of these to plant I just dig a big trench and lay them all out before covering back up with soil.

This isn’t Veronica, but a native NZ h**e or ‘koromiko’. They’re related (and it’s easy to see why) and as members of the snapdragon family they produce beautiful evergreen foliage and gorgeous spikey flowers.

I haven’t seen them used much in floristry but they are a great ingredient in bouquets because of the structural foliage and long lasting flowers. As an evergreen they are always producing and they’re fairly easy to grow.

I love using natives in florals and it’s easy when they’re this gorgeous. And with about 80 distinct species (our largest plant group) there is plenty of choice!

Darwin hybrids and the best tulips IMO 🙏🏼

🌷 They have those classic large tulip blooms on strong tall stems, incredible colour, and unlike many tulips… they’re actually known for being perennial.

❓ Most tulips slowly decline after their first year, especially in warmer climates and they’re treated by most growers as annuals. But Darwin Hybrids are much more reliable at returning year after year when planted in good conditions with dry summer dormancy (in the fridge they go)!

♥️ They’re tougher, longer-lasting, better naturalisers, and put on a seriously impressive spring display. And so good as a cut flower!

👌🏻 If you want tulips that don’t just look beautiful for one season, start with Darwin Hybrids.

Yes it’s cooling down out there but the planting doesn’t stop. Autumn is a great time to transplant hardy annuals and perennials while the ground is moist and the sun is still out. I’m planting achillea, feverfew, campanula, statice and strawflower out now so they’ll be ready to grow once spring brings more warmth in a couple of months.
