Another beaut day at the farmers market!

Blessed with sunshine and a good crowd, this is becoming a little Auckland central institution if you ask me. Lovely seeing people out and about, meeting regulars and making new friends!

Such a good way to start the weekend! Karangahape Farmers Market is from 9am to 2pm every Saturday at Samoa House Lane off Pitt St in Auckland C*D. I’m there every month around the middle Saturday. Check my website or drop me a DM to see when I’m there next!

Tulip time is over. Dahlia season begins!

There’s always a slightly sad moment when the last tulips disappear from my Auckland garden, but it’s considerably easier to cope with when there’s a big box of dahlia tubers waiting to take their place!

And this year, there are rather a lot of them. Loads of new varieties, plus twice as many stored from last year.

Over the next few weeks I’ll be planting dahlias for a summer full of colour, cutting and floristry.

Now help me out: what’s the one dahlia variety you’d grow every year?

The ranunculus this season! I can’t say I’ve cracked it but I’m definitely getting better crops from seed than corns this year. And the colour of these is fire!

These Italian Ranunculas are ‘Elegance Clementine’ and they truly are stunning, in bright orange with multiple layers of petals that seem to open up in a way that makes it feel like the petals come from nowhere 🧡

Welcome to The Naked Florist… where flowers are grown a little differently.

What started in an Auckland backyard has become a flower garden, a floristry business and this funny little corner of the internet where I get to share what I’m learning along the way.

There’ll be growing. Gardening. Floristry. Beautiful things. Stuff that goes so well and stuff that doesn’t!

My favourite topic though: why gardens seem to matter to us quite as much as they do.

Nigella damascena has collected quite the list of names over the years! Most inspired by the way its delicate flowers sit amongst that wonderfully fine, feathery foliage.

Romantic Love-in-a-Mist.
Slightly more sinister Devil-in-a-Bush.
Rather inappropriate Virgin-in-the-Green.
And then, Ragged Lady.

I think Nigella is interesting enough without any of them. But Love-in-a-Mist is pretty hard to beat!
