Europe House at Auckland University of Technology in hosted yesterday a lively debate on the media perceptions of the European Union in New Zealand.

30 academics and media professionals joined forces to share insights and consider options for addressing the media's perception of the locally. The event featured the year-long research by Prof. Martin Holland and Dr Serena Kelly from the EUCN - New Zealand European Union Centres Network at the University of Canterbury in Christchurch, NZ. Prof. Karin Wahl-Jorgensen of Cardiff University and Dr Agnes Gulyas of Canterbury Christ Church University in the UK, brought insights into Britain's recent media and social media portrayals of the EU.

Following a number of thought-provoking presentations, the participants concurred that there is still a number of media stereotypes in New Zealand, which are affecting local perceptions of the EU.
