Inspired by the neighbourhood florists of Paris, where buckets of flowers lined the streets and locals filled their homes with fresh blooms, La Femme Fleur brings the freshest, New Zealand grown flowers to Westmere, Herne Bay, Ponsonby and St Mary’s Bay.

“I fell in love with flowers while living in Montmartre. I was charmed by bunches of tulips wrapped in brown paper, and the pyramids of peonie

s at street markets,” says owner Millicent Austin. Parisians treat flowers as a necessity, a part of everyday life, and La Femme Fleur wants Aucklanders to do the same. The flower truck opened in Coxs Bay in 2014 and has become a part of the community. Now La Femme Fleur has opened its first shop in the old post office building in Ponsonby.

CAROLE

As part of our celebration of all the people that are a part of the flower truck it felt essential to acknowledge the founder Carole Bowden 🩷

We feel very lucky to have inherited the special community that was established by Carole. The vibe she created at the park and the relationships she had with the community over 13 years, is something we’ve been so proud to carry forward.

And she’s still such an important part of the flower truck. Carole now grows flowers on her farm in Northland and through summer she provides us the most amazing Gomphrena, dahlia, zinnia, ammobium, amaranthus (the list goes on!) from her garden. We love catching up with her at flower drop offs and when she’s in town visiting her mokopuna. She’s got the same bubbly energy and smile🥰

We’re looking forward to the warmer weather and getting our hands on a new season of Carole’s delicious creations 💐

IKEBANA ICON AND PARK POSY PRO

Maree came to us because her son told her she’d be amazing at the flower truck. And he was soooo right. Yes, she’s an AMAZING florist (check out her stunning Ikebana work ikebanabymaree), but she also brings a special energy to La Femme Fleur 🩷

Maree is our park posy and Rosie’s posy Queen. She’s got a subtle and stylish touch and eye for unique floral combinations.

She’s always got her lippy on and her hair done. She’s our voice of reason and keeps us calm under pressure. She loves a laugh, the easiest person to talk to and we’re sure customers come down just to have a chat with Maree

She’s the most amazing mum. The relationship Maree has with her boys is so full of love and communication and reciprocity. I really hope to have the same bond with Max and Freddie when they’re grown up🥰

Our day always gets better when Maree pulls into the park with her smile. Come get some of her energy and one of her posies today!

Tulips are a core part of the origin story of La Femme Fleur 🌷

When we first arrived in Paris we were broke. We were days away from calling our parents to book us a flight home. With the support of a very special friend and then Si’s grandfather’s close friends (who had looked after their son in Melbourne 25 years earlier) we were able to keep a roof over our head. And then things started to fall into place.
We both got good jobs and a permanent place to live (the maid’s quarters above the family I worked for).

Suddenly the Euros were coming in. Every Friday after he was paid Si would buy me a bunch of tulips from the florist outside the Metro station. They were only €4 but felt like an absolute luxury and filled our life with so much joy - a manifestation of our survival.

It was this every day affordability that meant so many Parisians bought flowers all the time that inspired the idea behind the flower truck 🌷

This week we’re excited to have a special deal on a crowd favourite – lilies! 🥳

For three bunches of white or pink lilies we have a special price of $55, or two bunches for $40. Single bunches are available for $25.

Lilies have had a special place in my heart ever since Si was first falling in love with me and he sent a bouquet to Akaroa for my birthday. They were anonymous except for a card message that said: “Lilies for Millie.” What a romantic! 😍

COFFEE QUEEN TO FLOWER FAIRY

In 2020 our beautiful Natnaree moved from Thailand to New Zealand to spend a year exploring and working her way around the country. Instead, she fell in love, got locked down by Covid and found a new outlet for her artistry – flowers.

When Nat joined La Femme Fleur in 2023 she had no experience in the flower industry but we were drawn to her beautiful pottery business (check it out ) and her good vibes. She had been working at Kōkākō coffee and was looking to do something with her artistic abilities and we’re so glad she’s found that through flowers.

She has picked up floristry so fast and we’re so proud of the unique style she’s developed. She has a stunning energy that she brings to the truck every day and never lets a bit of wind or rain get in the way of her vibe.

We were very lucky to attend her wedding to Cody last year and Nat’s passion for all things gorgeous and delicious was on display all day. Nat had caught Cody’s eye making his coffee and then they locked in their love through Covid lock down. It was a privilege to be a part of such a special day of love.

We love having Nat as part of the La Femme Fleur whānau. Who wants to see her make a bespoke range of ceramic vases?

FRIDAY FEELS 🥰

Just two weeks ago we shared the uncertain future we were facing. It was really scary putting our story out there, but so much has changed in the industry and the economy has been so tough for so long, we wanted to be open and honest with our community about how precarious things were.

But, so much can change in such a short time. We’ve been blown away by the love you’ve shown us. There has been a real vibe down at the truck and it’s been so lovely to see everyone. It’s meant so much to us to know that our flowers have such an important place in the local community.

We’ve also been really touched by the response to our content. People have loved learning more about the rollercoaster ride of La Femme Fleur. Reflecting on everything we’ve been through over the last 11 years has been a good reminder of why we do what we do and the resilience of this business. So we're going to continue sharing the behind the scenes insights, the stories of the people that make La Femme Fleur special and some special promotions and prizes.

So today we’ve got a really special price on double daffodils, $15 a bunch or two for $25. Come down and see us. It’s a beautiful day for flowers.

THE LA FEMME FLEUR FAMILY

Five years ago our twin boys Max and Freddie joined our flower family.

In a blunt sign of what CEO-mum life would look like, I had worked right through my pregnancy during the busy Christmas period. I finally closed the truck on Christmas Eve and we had three weeks to prepare for the boy’s birth. But on Boxing Day, my water broke. At 5:26pm Max arrived, followed two minutes later by Freddie. And suddenly working-mum life began.

I felt huge pressure to return to work to keep the business flourishing, to stay present in the community and to keep the mortgage paid. With the support of my amazing staff (love you Cush) we were open again by 23 January 2020.

It was such a heavy balancing act. I was so lucky to have so much support from my family, my team and the community. But when the first Covid lockdown was announced it felt like a relief. I acknowledge the huge cost the pandemic had on so many people, but it gave us permission to focus on our babies and not have to worry about anything else.

Then we had to work out how to adapt, not just to a world reshaped by Covid, but to our world reshaped by the privilege of raising these little boys. It’s been a rollercoaster that has pulled me in so many different directions. I did not know it would be possible to be this tired, or to love something this much, or to get so many things done in a day, or to miss Sunday sleep-ins so much.

It’s so easy to be really hard on yourself both as a mum and as a business owner. But when I look back on the past five years I’m so proud of the way we’ve raised our boys at the same time as growing our business.

From them sleeping in the boatshed at Cox’s Bay as babies, to them standing on the driveway waving as I head off in the dark at 5am, to seeing them do their own flower arrangements, they’ve become a part of La Femme Fleur. I couldn’t have done it without the support of the village that has been a part of the boys’ life and our flower community who have given us so much support.

Over the next week we’re going to be celebrating the La Femme Fleur family. Because we couldn’t do it without them. Come down and give them some love.

Tulip Tuesday! But it runs all week.

A reminder that this week we’re running a special deal on tulips – $11 a bunch to celebrate our 11th birthday.

Earlier this year we quietly celebrated our 11th birthday. Looking back at that moment it was a really big deal. We’ve been through so much over the last five years and we’re so grateful for the ongoing support of the community. This is our small way to say thank you.

Come see us and grab a bunch or three.

RAISON D’ÊTRE

Thank you! Last week was so overwhelming. To have you all come out and support La Femme Fleur meant so much to us. It was such a beautiful vibe at the truck.

La Femme Fleur was inspired by my time living in Paris. Flowers were seen as a necessity. And the local florists sold flowers by the bunch at a rate that allowed people to purchase them every week. I wanted to create a model that would allow my local community to have flowers in their life every day. I wanted to create a carefully curated menu of New Zealand’s best local flowers that I could sell at a rate that competes with supermarkets.

I named the business after Picasso’s painting of Françoise Gilot, the mother of his children.

It’s been a privilege to showcase New Zealand’s most beautiful flowers to you all.

This year has seen huge changes to the flower industry. The costs to grow flowers have increased significantly over the last five years. Covid lockdown forced many growers to destroy a number of harvests and we lost many amazing growers. The subsequent inflation has massively increased the costs for florists. Then this year the flower market was moved from Mt Wellington to East Tamaki and moved exclusively online. This has had a huge impact on the flower community and how we source flowers and are able to operate.

The cost of flowers alone has in many cases increased over 100% in the past five years. The cost of other overheads have all significantly increased at the same time.

Our vision remains the same: we want to make the best New Zealand grown flowers available to the local community at the best price. We are committed to continuing to compete with supermarkets on price, while expertly curating the most amazing local flowers.

We know that everyone is under immense financial pressure so it meant so much to see everyone last week. With your support we can reciprocate that love and continue to provide our community with the best flowers in the country.

BIRTHDAY🥳

Earlier this year we quietly celebrated our 11th birthday. Looking back at that moment it was a really big deal. It came a few months after the 5th birthday of my twin boys. Freida shares her birthday with the business. It’s been three years since we relocated to Shore Road. We’ve navigated Covid-19, floods, recessions and growing a family.

A lot of businesses don’t survive a year. To have made it to 11 years is something I’m super proud of. The relationships I’ve established with the community mean so much to me. The amazing team that supports me at the truck feels like family.

To celebrate, we’ve got a special deal on tulips for the next week – $11 a bunch to celebrate 11 years in business.

Come down to the truck and grab a bunch today!
