This week is Te Wiki o te Reo Māori - and just to say, e aroha ana a Ōmiha Folk Club ki te reo Māori! 10% of all folk club proceeds this season will be donated to Ngā Purapura Akoranga, Te Huruhi School's reorua / bilingual unit, who do amazing mahi nurturing young te reo speakers in our community ❤️🖤

Join us for a club night with floor spots first half + special guest Hannah Morrell. Hannah is originally from Lutruwita/Tasmania and has travelled the world in folk, punk, and folk-punk bands for the past 15 years, before following her heart and landing in Aotearoa. Her refreshing take on folk comes from honest reflections from her life and her self-deprecating humour. Most recently she has supported John Craigie and Beans on Toast, and played violin with Fables, Greta O'Leary, The Dead Magpies (Aus), and Claire Anne Taylor (Aus). Hannah's dynamic mix of melancholic rambles and rollicking singalong banjo originals are not to be missed!

Fats White is a celebrated icon of the Aotearoa underground and an extraordinary multimedia artist long revered by the old guard of the Auckland music scene. Fats, who has described himself as “a persimmon-eater living in the seasons of a pretty complicated world,” performs self-penned songs on the ukulele that resist classification, but could be considered part punk, part outsider folk and all carnivalesque showmanship. His work seems to spring from a deep well of primal weirdness, and those who appreciate the weirder side of folk will recognise the dark humour and surreal artistry in his work, which has been likened to a cross between Captain Beefheart, Jim Morrison, and Tom Waits. Coming soon to the Rocky Bay Folk Club! 🖤

Kia ora folkies! Hope you're keeping warm! Spring isn't too far away now and we are gearing up for a very full spring & summer season of gatherings, singarounds and some truly amazing visiting folk singers and musicians. We've made sure to include lots of opportunity for floor spots and audience involvement so this is a reminder to dust off your banjo, shake the crickets out of your fiddle & get playing! Rocky Bay Folk Club presents Jennifer Reid (UK) Thursday April 10th at 7pm! Folk music has lost it's way, and people have lost touch with their geographical heritage. The working classes made music as a provocation and this is a tradition Jennifer continues.

“𝘓𝘢𝘯𝘤𝘢𝘴𝘩𝘪𝘳𝘦 𝘥𝘪𝘢𝘭𝘦𝘤𝘵 𝘢𝘯𝘥 𝘝𝘪𝘤𝘵𝘰𝘳𝘪𝘢𝘯 𝘉𝘳𝘰𝘢𝘥𝘴𝘪𝘥𝘦 𝘣𝘢𝘭𝘭𝘢𝘥 𝘴𝘪𝘯𝘨𝘦𝘳 𝘑𝘦𝘯𝘯𝘪𝘧𝘦𝘳 𝘙𝘦𝘪𝘥 𝘪𝘴 𝘣𝘳𝘶𝘵𝘢𝘭𝘭𝘺 𝘩𝘰𝘯𝘦𝘴𝘵, 𝘱𝘰𝘸𝘦𝘳𝘧𝘶𝘭 𝘢𝘯𝘥 𝘢𝘶𝘵𝘩𝘦𝘯𝘵𝘪𝘤. 𝘙𝘦𝘪𝘥 𝘥𝘦𝘴𝘦𝘳𝘷𝘦𝘴 𝘰𝘶𝘳 𝘢𝘵𝘵𝘦𝘯𝘵𝘪𝘰𝘯 𝘢𝘯𝘥 𝘦𝘮𝘣𝘰𝘥𝘪𝘦𝘴 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘨𝘳𝘪𝘵𝘵𝘺, 𝘩𝘰𝘯𝘦𝘴𝘵 𝘵𝘳𝘶𝘵𝘩 𝘰𝘧 𝘧𝘰𝘭𝘬 𝘮𝘶𝘴𝘪𝘤. Following Jennifer's performance she will be joined by Professor of Geography and Head of School at the University of Auckland's School of Environment, Robin Kearns, for a conversation on music and place. Robin has a lifelong interest in music, despite never having played any instrument except a stereo. He published his first concert review at 17 and has been writing about music since. In latter years he has integrated a career as a geographer with a musical curiosity. Robin's key interest is place: where music comes from, the significance of where it is performed, and it's contribution to people's experience of community and identity.

There is nothing we love more than to host up & coming, and established, folk musicians both local and from further afield! As with all folk clubs, we are very much a community-based, grassroots kind of organisation with a particular focus on traditional folk music & singing, but we are open to more contemporary takes and adjacent styles as well. If you would like to perform at the folk club, we would warmly encourage you to come along to one of our club nights and play a couple of songs as a floor spot so that we can get an idea of your sound. We'd really love to meet you! 🪕
