Why Workforce Training Fails and How To Ensure It Doesn't
As we prepare to dive into deep training with a new business, it's helpful to remind ourselves why training sometimes fails to hit the mark.
Businesses will often put the effort into providing training for the workforce. That's a great start. But making it stick means doing some extra things to increase the chance of it making a real difference:
⚫ Make sure the training is aligned to the business goals and objectives. This might mean adapting the training content to reflect the business's unique position in the market or its life cycle. Making it specific to the business helps.
⚫ Get buy-in and support from the top. Training often applies to emerging leaders within the business to upskill and develop their confidence. Everyone, including the CEO, the SLT and even the Board needs to understand what is being trained and how that will show up in the business after the training concludes. These top line decision makers should be prepared for the follow up, which might come in the form of new enthusiasm to implement their learning in the business. This enthusiasm needs support and encouragement or else the impact of the training will be lost and deflation and disappointment will set in - the exact opposite of what the business needs.
