✨ NEW STAFF PROFILE ✨

Introducing…Cleo (Cleopatra)

3 month old Cleo has been settling in with us for the past month here at Suttondale.

Full of beans and eager to learn, she’s loving her new home with our big girl, Dora.

While she can’t yet be trusted in the garden - chomping puppy teeth - no doubt she’ll be out and about amongst the blooms this coming season 🌷🌻💐

Welcome home Cleo! 🌸🩵

🌷✌🏼BETTER LATE THAN NEVER ✌🏼🌷

I’m not sure where you’re at around NZ but, the rain 🌧️ has been a pretty big constant lately around Ashburton 😰

With Saturday rugby 🏉 done and dusted, a rare rainless Sunday means getting into the garden and getting the last of the chilled Tulip 🌷 bulbs into the ground and covered with bird net to stop the blackbirds 🐦‍⬛ digging them up 🙄

As for an update on the rest of the patch, the remainder of the tulips and ranunculus row has been cultivated and weeded, the ranunculus seedlings are ticking away in the greenhouse, and the remaining rows have been sprayed out to clear out some pesky weeds discovered from this past flowering season.

If you’d asked me 5 years ago if purchasing a cultivator from .co.nz would be a highlight of 2025, I would’ve laughed…

But, here I am 😅 Millenial me is in my element!

King’s 🤴 Birthday Weekend is a big chore weekend for the Sutton household as we plough 😉 through some garden chores before we head off on our first ever overseas family holiday! 🛬

Turning the beds over, pre-chilled tulip bulbs in the ground, getting the last of the sunflower 🌻 bed stripped, and building an outdoor puppy 🐶 crèche for our new arrival due home less than 12 hours after we return to NZ!

We’ve never dabbled with Tulips 🌷 before so we’ve got a bit of a taster selection to try out this spring from 🌱

We hope everyone is having a productive or relaxing long weekend! 🙌🏼

Seed sorting got me over here feeling like the neighbourhood dealer 😂

To be fair, I am using a pill counting tray - my old vet nursing days still die hard some times 😅👩🏻‍⚕️🐶

After harvesting seed heads over the last few weeks, drying, shucking, sieving, blowing out, in the name of separating seed from chaff, it’s no mean feat getting to the star of the show! 😮‍💨

Slowly but surely, seeds are being separated, counted, bagged, heat sealed, and labelled - all for YOU, so you can have a wee taste of cut flower magic at home 🌸🏡

Cosmos 🌼, Strawflowers 🌸, Marigolds🌻, Zinnias 💐 just to name a few!

We’ve managed to squeeze one final bouquet for the season out of the field for this rather dismal looking week ahead 🌧️😒

And the field DID 👏🏼 NOT 👏🏼 DISAPPOINT 👏🏼🤩

Frosts, Frosts, Frosts……🥶

Siiiiigh…we knew it was coming. And frost season has made herself known.

Finding flowers that remain untouched from the last couple of wee frosts is a bit of a scavenger hunt. There is still a little bit of beauty to be had…but it’s living on borrowed time.

This morning we were able to get out a wee pink Dahlia/Zinnia combo 🌸💖

However, our focus is shifting from bundling up bouquets, to sowing spring seed and harvesting seed from this seasons annuals.

Keep your eyes peeled! Our next wee project is providing you with beautiful cottage garden seed for you to be able to grow your own stunning flowers at home!
