On the occasion of Maghe Sankranti, a unique and centuries-old cultural tradition takes place at Ghale Bhanjyang, Nuwakot—the Ox Fighting Festival.

Celebrated every year on the first day of the Nepali month of Magh, Maghe Sankranti marks the end of winter and the beginning of longer, warmer days. On this auspicious day, locals of Ghale Bhanjyang organize ox fighting as a symbol of strength, courage, and agricultural heritage. Strong, well-trained oxen are brought together in an open field, where they lock horns under the supervision of experienced elders and organizers. The fight continues until one ox retreats, and no weapons or artificial force are used, making it a traditional and rule-guided event.

This festival reflects the deep respect farmers have for oxen, which play a vital role in traditional farming. Villagers, visitors, and cultural enthusiasts gather in large numbers to witness the event, enjoy local food, music, and celebrate community unity. The ox fighting festival of Ghale Bhanjyang is not only a form of entertainment but also an important effort to preserve indigenous culture and pass it on to future generations.
