Ontmoet NDSM Artist in Resident: Bart Houwers!

Op dinsdag 2 december van 17:00 tot 19:00 opent Bart Houwers zijn studio op voor de eindpresentatie van zijn residentie op de NDSM-werf. Bezoekers zijn welkom voor een borrel en kennismaking met zijn praktijk en plannen voor de publieke ruimte.

Om 18:00 uur presenteert hij zijn ervaringen tijdens de afgelopen drie maanden op de werf, waarin hij onderzoek deed naar werken in de openbare ruimte en de omgang met materiaal, context en schaal.

Bart Houwers is de eerste kunstenaar binnen het NDSM Artist in Residence-programma. Kom langs, ontmoet Bart en ontdek hoe hij zijn praktijk verder ontwikkelt.

Meet the NDSM Artist in Residence: Bart Houwers
On Tuesday 2 December from 17:00 to 19:00, Bart Houwers opens his studio for the final presentation of his residency at the NDSM wharf. Visitors are welcome to join for a drink and to learn more about his practice and ideas for the public space.

At 18:00, he will share his experiences from the past three months, during which he explored working in public space and how to deal with material, context and scale.

Bart Houwers is the first artist to take part in the NDSM Artist in Residence programme. Come along, meet Bart and discover how he is developing his practice further.

There are still a few spots available for different films. Get your tickets quickly and enjoy popular blockbusters this weekend, such as How to Train Your Dragon and Jurassic World: Rebirth. NDSM by Night: Een andere kijk op de kunstwerken en installaties op de werf

Wanneer de avond valt en de werf verlicht wordt door een oranje gloed, verandert het terrein in een bijzondere verlichte openluchtgalerie. De kunstwerken krijgen een andere uitstraling in het donker en bij zonsondergang.

Schattige babyvoetjes van licht subtiel op en krijgt een bijna poëtische sfeer.

Under Pressure van & is al vanuit de verte te zien vanaf het water en zweeft als een baken van licht in het donker.

In Tune van laat de omgeving verstillen en zorgt voor een prachtige reflectie in het water, net als All the Tyres from Iceland van

Ervaar hoe de NDSM-werf ’s avonds verandert en de kunst een nieuwe dimensie krijgt.

NDSM by Night: A different view of the artworks and installations on the wharf

When the evening comes and the wharf is lit by an orange glow, the area turns into a special open-air gallery. The artworks look different in the dark and when the sun sets.

Schattige babyvoetjes by lights up softly and gets an almost poetic feeling.

Under Pressure by & can be seen from far away over the water and floats like a beacon of light in the night.

In Tune by makes the surroundings fall silent and creates a beautiful reflection in the water, just like All the Tyres from Iceland by

Ondanks dat de winter officieel is begonnen, en daarmee het winterse weer, komt de zon geregeld door en is het heerlijk om te wandelen over de NDSM samen met het gezin. Dit kan op een leuke en toegankelijke manier met onze NDSM speurtocht!👀

Verspreid over de NDSM-werf zijn allerlei kunstwerken en verborgen elementen te vinden zoals In Tune van of NDSM Lusthof van , die allemaal een bijzonder verhaal vertellen. Met de NDSM Speurtocht ga je op zoek naar deze kunstwerken en los je onderweg puzzels op. Lukt het je om de rebus goed te ontcijferen? Dan wacht er iets lekkers op je!

Even though winter has officially begun – and with it the wintry weather – the sun still makes an appearance now and then, making it perfect for a family walk around NDSM. And what better way to do so than with our fun and accessible NDSM Treasure Hunt! 👀

Spread across the NDSM wharf are various artworks and hidden elements like In Tune made by or NDSM Lusthof made by , each telling its own unique story. During the NDSM Treasure Hunt you’ll search for these objects and solve puzzles along the way. Will you manage to decipher the riddle correctly? If so, a tasty treat awaits you!

Ben je de afgelopen maand op de NDSM geweest? Dan heb je het grote tekstwerk van vast gezien.🤩

‘Schattige babyvoetjes’ pronkt sinds september op de Y-helling en zorgt voor veel gespreksstof. Eén ding is zeker: het is een uitgesproken werk vol betekenis, zeker op deze locatie. Van der Stokker vertelt ons er meer over.

In onze nieuwe terugkerende rubriek ‘Under the Surface’ vertellen we je elke week een leuk en mogelijk onbekend weetje of verhaal over de geschiedenis van de werf, het gebied, onze kunstenaars en programmering. Aangezien het gebied zo veel geschiedenis en verhalen heeft en er zo veel gebeurd, willen we hier meer over uitlichten op onze kanalen!

Deze week in ‘Under the Surface’; Wist je dat de naam NDSM eigenlijk een samenvoeging is van twee scheepswerven? 🛳️

Na de oorlog, op 27 februari 1946, besloten de Nederlandsche Dok Maatschappij (NDM) en de Nederlandsche Scheepsbouw Maatschappij (NSM) samen te gaan onder één naam: Nederlandsche Dok en Scheepsbouw Maatschappij — NDSM.

Samen groeiden ze uit tot de grootste scheepswerf van Nederland, waar imposante schepen van stapel liepen en generaties vakmensen werden opgeleid. Inmiddels is het gebied veranderd in een bruisende plek van kunst, cultuur en evenementen.

In our new weekly series ‘Under the Surface’, we share a fun – and often little-known – fact or story about the history of the wharf, the area, our artists, and our programme. Because the area has so much history and so many stories, we want to highlight more of them on our channels.

This week in ‘Under the Surface’: Did you know that the name NDSM is actually a combination of two shipyards? 🛳️

After the war, on 27 February 1946, the Nederlandsche Dok Maatschappij (NDM) and the Nederlandsche Scheepsbouw Maatschappij (NSM) decided to join under one name: Nederlandsche Dok en Scheepsbouw Maatschappij — NDSM.

Together, they grew into the largest shipyard in the Netherlands, where impressive ships were built and generations of skilled workers were trained. The area has since transformed into a vibrant place for art, culture, and events.

Heb jij ze al gezien in de ?

Sinds 12 september staan de twee winnende kunstwerken van de NDSM Open Call in de : Shells van Lyangelo Vasquez () en ! van Renée Marcus Janssen (). Met deze jaarlijkse Open Call stimuleren Stichting NDSM-werf en Stichting Kinetisch Noord de creativiteit van makers op de werf.

Shells is een interactieve installatie over de impact van 110 jaar petroleumindustrie op Curaçao. Met een grijpmachine kunnen bezoekers 70 handgemaakte terracottaschelpen ontdekken, elk met een eigen verhaal en een indrukwekkende soundscape.

! Beschermdemonen van de NDSM laat je omhoog kijken naar sculpturen die, geïnspireerd op de chimaera’s van de Notre-Dame, symbolisch waken over de loods en haar makers.

Have you spotted them yet?

Since 12 September, the two winning artworks of the NDSM Open Call are on view in the : Shells by Lyangelo Vasquez and ! by Renée Marcus Janssen. With this annual Open Call, Stichting NDSM-werf and Stichting Kinetisch Noord support the creativity of makers working on the wharf.

Shells is an interactive installation about the impact of 110 years of the petroleum industry on Curaçao. Visitors can use a grab machine to pick up 70 handmade terracotta shells, each carrying its own story and a powerful soundscape.

! Guardians of NDSM invites visitors to look up at sculptural figures inspired by the chimaera of Notre-Dame. They symbolically protect the NDSM-loods and the makers who keep this place alive.

Jawel — onze eigen NDSM-werf stond in de laatste editie van de Donald Duck! Tussen de kleurrijke strips prijkt de herkenbare containerboog The Only Way Is Up van .nl. Ook Ons kantoor van Stichting NDSM-werf is terug te zien in de strip, maar dan wel zonder ‘Schattige babyvoetjes’ van .

Recap: Don’t Worry, It’s (Only) Temporary!

Last week, we gathered at NDSM for our conference, with (inter)national artists, curators, and cultural organisations to talk about temporary art in public space.

Together, we explored the challenges and impact of the temporary, guided by moderator . With many inspiring speakers sharing their valuable insights from different perspectives, we collectively (re)thought of commissioning, creation, and collaboration in the evolving landscape of public art. Including our director .Vermeulen.ndsm, artistic director Stroom The Hague .landre.official , Chief Executive of Creative Folkestone ( ), Visual artist .Houwers, and Architect , among many others.
